Regular School Hours

Dickenson County School Board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day. I strongly disagree with this idea. I do not feel an extension will benefit students or staff. School days require too many hours already. Students and staff may not have enough time for after school activities. More hours spent in school will result in stress being added to everyone involved. There are many different negative reasons to not put this idea into further consideration. The school board must consider all of the negative effects on adding extra time to the day before it makes its decision. Nevertheless, the school board should weigh out all of the pros and cons of adding extra hours to the school day before putting this plan into extra consideration.

There is too many negative effects to this idea, which means it will result in a bad outcome for everyone involved. There is plenty enough time in the school day for students to finish their work. Adding more time into the day will not only make students stressed out, there will not be enough time to participate in any after school activities. There is ample amount of time in the day to complete classwork. We do not need any more time in the school day. In addition, there is already eight and a half hours in the school day, adding an extra hour and a half will result in the school day being ten hours long! That is an unnecessary amount of time to be in school. Students will be tired, overworked, and stressed thus, they will not get their homework finished. If a student stays up all night doing homework, they will be gloomy and tired at school the next day, meaning they will not want to do their work in class. There is too many negative effects to this idea. Above all, this idea will result in students having lower grades. That is unacceptable. To sum it all up, the school board shall not put any more thought into this

Twelve schools in the county are thinking about changing to a year-round school schedule, I agree with them wanting the change it because it is a lot more beneficial to the students. The year round school schedule benefits students by (1)having more breaks, (2)less missed school, (3)and not forgetting crucial information during the long summer break. A benefit to the year round school schedule is that the students get more breaks. Since the students get more breaks, they have more opportunities for vacation. More vacations allow students to have more fun, and since they will be having more fun they will be happier students.…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…
