In recent years there have been a number of malpractice lawsuits filed against psychiatrists and counselors claiming that “false memories” had been implanted in patients, thus causing turmoil and anguish in the patient’s lives, as acknowledged in the article, “Creating False Memories” by Elizabeth F. Loftus. Loftus adds that the victims in all mentioned cases in the article were awarded substantial settlements. The author asserts that research is revealing how “suggestion and imagination” can cause an individual to generate recollections of experiences that never really transpired. Amnesia or amnesic syndrome, is a shortage in memory caused by damage in the brain. The person with amnesia won’t be able to remember certain things. The extent of the damage determines whether the memory is fully or partially lost. Though having no sense of who you are is a common plot device in movies and television, real-life amnesia generally doesn't cause a loss of self-identity. Instead, people with amnesia are usually aware and know who they are, but may have trouble learning new information and forming new memories, or remembering old memories.…

This semester, we were asked to recall the events of a day that happened six weeks prior to the beginning of class. While some students could explain some details of what they had done that day, not all could be certain. Details may not seem to be that important when telling a story from a childhood experience or maybe the retelling of a joke, but what if a person was made to recall a memory that took place six weeks ago?…

Charlemagne once said, “To have another language is to have a second soul” (BrainyQuote). As a native Spanish speaker, I find this statement to be true since I think about objects different than an English native speaker would. For example, when thinking about objects Spanish speakers tend to associate objects with genders while English speakers do not. The topic of language and how people think has been studied by a few Linguists, Psychologists, and Neuroscientists. Research and studies have shown that our native language modifies the way people retrieve memories, think about time , and think about space.…
