Background to the problem
After careful review it has been determined that the current cost associated with the utilization of the services provided at the Regional Hospital, is in need of immediate review. The Regional Hospital is located in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area of North Carolina. If the current costs are not contained and measures put in place to reduce cost, this could affect the hospital’s ability to continue providing service to this community. In light of these circumstances it has been decided to employ the services of a disease management company. The aim of disease management programs is to decrease the cost of caring for the chronically ill, while providing better care, and thereby reducing avoidable complications. Disease management programs are typically used to manage the cost associated with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, congestive heart failure, high-risk pregnancy, arthritis, hypertension, depression, coronary heart disease and end-stage renal disease. The doctors associated with the program are provided with practices guidelines. To ensure consistency across the population being treated, doctors are provided with guidelines are based on clinical evidence. The success of this implementation will be evaluated through the utilization of healthcare services, expenditures and patient satisfaction. These factors will be compared to the current figures.
