Regina Spektor’s song “On the Radio” tells a fascinating story of humanity by showing how emotions affect our lives. Opening the song Regina states, “this is how it works you’re young until you’re not.” Meaning that growing up, losing your beloved youth is a part of human reality. Even if people are constantly trying to preserve their youth, one day it will slip away and we’ll all have grown old. Regina’s beautiful song lyrics go on to say, “you love until you don’t.” Implying that love is an indistinguishably human experience; we all have experienced love, or the absence of love. Love is an unquestionable part of mankind’s existence. Just like happiness and sadness, Regina shows the sentiment in her lyrics saying, “you laugh until

Songs are poems set to music. They come in all different varieties, genres and styles but often the message conveyed is similar. In modern music the message or theme usually relates to love or substance abuse. A few decades ago, the messages were comparable, and even though society was quite different then, the themes in music were relatively the same. Two such examples are “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay and the Americans and “A Woman Needs Love” by Ray Parker Jr. Both of these songs share a common idea of women cheating.…

By the late 1960’s and early 70’s women were questioning the inequality in society, including in music culture. With the rise of the feminist movement during the early 1970’s, we saw not just an increase in the number of women participating in pop music but also a change in how they participated. Carole King entered the music scene as a singer-songwriter, penning lyrics that were more personal and introspective than previous music had been. For example , Carole Kings it;s too late,” from her 1971 Tapestry album, boasted confessional lyrics that exemplified the genre: “There’ll be good times agin for me and you,. But we just can’t stay together.…

Like popular music, the majority of country songs deal with love. Easily the single most prominent theme in country music is unsatisfactory love relations. An earlier study of popular music found expressions of romantic discord to be common. In country music, however, the audience not only knows that the singer is unhappy but is candidly told why. If satisfactory male-female relations are equated with good marriage, then unsatisfactory relations are most often associated with a marriage that is going, or has gone, wrong.…

As coined by the Father of His Country, “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company.” This is doubly appropriate as love is nothing more than a series of traumatic and disappointing events. Certain authors utilize their works to portray love from their perspective and/or experience. In “Love Song, with Two Goldfish” by Grace Chua, the author illustrates rejection in the most heartbreaking way possible. In the poem “What Love Isn’t” by Yrsa Daley-Ward, she depicts love as unbearable and somber rather than the joyful and wholesome experience consistently shown throughout pop culture.…

While my parents traveled to and from work everyday, there were a couple of songs they may have heard quite often due to their popularity. If they happened to be listening to the radio when I was born, they more than likely heard the number one song “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith (“Birthday No #1.”), which won the MTV Movie Award for Best Song from a Movie (“Aerosmith Awards.”). Diane Warren, the songwriter, became nominated for an Oscar for the Best Music from an Original Song, won the ASCAP Award for Most Performed Songs from Motion Pictures, and was even nominated for the Grammy Best Song written Specifically for Motion Picture or for Television (“Diane Warren Awards.”). Other songs they may have heard could have been “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John or even “Truly Madly Deeply” by Savage Garden ("90s Hits – Billboard #1s.”). Other than listening to songs, my parents often found themselves sitting on a comfortable couch watching a hit TV show.…

In 2004, the alternative rock music world was shook by the release of the song, “Alive With the Glory of Love” by Say Anything, with a catchy beat and an interesting backstory it quickly gained popularity and resonated with many listeners especially myself. The story of this song tells about the lead singer Max Bemis’s grandparents who were survivors of the holocaust and how through the challenging times they experienced they both found each other and let love be their escape and lasting hope. While the story of his grandparents was the key theme, it is also based on a short relationship the lead singer Max Bemis had at one point and even though it didn’t work out in the end it was the possibility of being able to share something special with…

“Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” is the burning question constantly being asked in Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful (LINE 10-11). Young and Beautiful was used for the 2013 movie adaptation of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, which took in place in the 1920s.
