Regarding Henry

In class we watched the movie “Regarding Henry” about a grown man who is a very successful lawyer and focuses on his work more than anything else. His Id is very prominent and overpowering, but his superego comes out more when he’s shot in a store trying to get some cigarettes. Henry’s natural state though is his superego. The way he is in the beginning of this movie may seem like he’s very self-consumed but deep down has morals and loves his family.

First, his Id is greatly shown in the beginning of the movie when he’s selfish and insensitive to the feelings of others and what is morally right. He was yelling at his daughter for not being responsible and spilling orange juice on his piano. His wife told him to apologize

As he learned about his past self and remembered aspects of himself, his home, family, and job he started to dislike his old self and realize he was a bad person and that made him feel bad which shows his morals going to work thus his superego. When he was at a big party and he spent his time talking to the black server holding a tray of food and asking him all these questions about his family. Another example is when he quits his job because he can’t be a part of such a bad company anymore. Lastly him and his wife go and take Rachel out of school because he wanted them to be a family and she was sad there anyway and that made Henry upset his little girl wasn’t happy.

His natural state of being is his superego. It was revealed after being shot and in the hospital. His memory loss brought him back to a childish state of mind basically letting Henry start all over and think a new way and be the kind of person he wants to be. The amount of compassion and love towards everyone after the accident shows who Henry really is. Not some evil lawyer just trying to win his case and get all the money when really the case should have gone in favor of the other
