America is a country founded on immigration, and our principles promote freedom of religion. Most of us would not be here today if it were not for our ancestors immigrating here in the United States from elsewhere. The role of Islam in the America of the Founding Fathers was in the words of the Founding Fathers themselves. The Founders of this nation clearly included Islam in their vision of the future of the republic, while establishing the principles of religious liberty. Freedom of religion, as these Founding Fathers regarded it as, encompassed it. Those who practiced Islam were viewed as men and women who would make law-abiding, productive citizens (Huebner, 3).

Refugees are put through more intensive screening measures than other group we allow into the United States. First, refugees are screened by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This process includes very lengthy, in-depth reference checks and interviews. Then, the UNHCR recommends refugees who have passed the first part of the process to the American government. The American government then conducts its own screening process consisting of consultation from nine separate government agencies. After the refugees pass this part of the process, they then have to go through another round of interviews done by U.S. officials. Overall, this arduous process takes approximately two years before they are even allowed to settle in the United States (Huebner, 4). As a result of this intensive screening process, we have a very good idea of who we are letting into this country, and we should not be living in fear. And the significant numbers prove its effectiveness. Since the September 11th attacks, the United States has resettled 784,000 refugees. Only three have been suspected of engaging in terrorist activities (Nardone, 3). Out of those three, two were not planning an attack in the United States, and the other suspect’s plans were barely even credible.
