Today we put forth a new proposal to implement legal safeguards to protect both children and adults from the harms of immigration detention. For far too long we have become insensitive towards the cruel treatment of refugees. We have lost perspective on who these people really are and what they have to offer. These people, no matter the circumstance, have faces, names, families, hopes, dreams and aspirations just like you and me. It’s time we finally acknowledge them for who they are as fellow members of our community. Australia is lucky country, or so we are told. A country where we pride ourselves on our diverse society and claim that our most attractive asset is our multicultural community. So, why is it considered a norm to turn our heads at the question of asylum seekers and the treatment of them?

After Baxter detention centre held a mentally ill German citizen for more than nine months, an investigation showed the harsh conditions within detention centres. The investigation shined light on the obvious problems within these detention centres. Why are some beds without mattresses? Why are the toilets without doors? Why do the showers not have curtains? Does Australia consider this
