The media occupies a unique position of power within our society. When people think of the media they think of such things as print, online, radio and television stations. These kind of media outlets play an integral part in the shaping of our culture and society, while being outside it in some sense; it exists solely as a cog in the system as it is much needed albeit it is also as an observer outside the system. It encourages and criticises, reports and contorts, informs and influences world and local events and international relations.

The media can affect networks of people and has power over the influence of groups of people. Bergan (2009) states that “Citizens learn about politics and government primarily from television and newspapers; these media outlets can influence voters not only through the slant of a particular report, but also merely by choosing which to stories to cover.” This quote from Bergans essay shows the power the media can have over the political opinions of the networks they operate
