The purpose of this case study is to educate and constructively break down the refugee crisis in Europe of people flocking in droves from places such as Syria and Northern Africa by looking at how the media has affected the opinions of people and influenced decisions through the aspects of Power and Self and Community. Power means a great deal to the human experience and is something a lot of humans sought out. The power to control the flow of information or how people act is exponentially powerful. Self and community are important aspects in the human experience as well. It helps us in relating to people and finding our place in society. These theories will show just how much of an impact the media plays in the refugee crisis and the power it holds over our opinions.

The media occupies a unique position of power within our society. When people think of the media they think of such things as print, online, radio and television stations. These kind of media outlets play an integral part in the shaping of our culture and society, while being outside it in some sense; it exists solely as a cog in the system as it is much needed albeit it is also as an observer outside the system. It encourages and criticises, reports and contorts, informs and influences world and local events and international relations.

The media can affect networks of people and has power over the influence of groups of people. Bergan (2009) states that “Citizens learn about politics and government primarily from television and newspapers; these media outlets can influence voters not only through the slant of a particular report, but also merely by choosing which to stories to cover.” This quote from Bergans essay shows the power the media can have over the political opinions of the networks they operate
