Reframing Reflection

Improved Essays
Journal #7: Reframing When I came across the topic of reframing in this week’s readings, I immediately thought of myself, and the way I tend to handle difficult and/or stressful situations. Unfortunately, when something doesn’t go my way, I tend to become irritated and ask myself why I have such bad luck. Recently, however, I have noticed myself reframing issues, even when I had never heard of this as a topic before reading chapter 10. For instance, in the beginning of the school year at USC, I was denied a waiver for the USC health insurance plan, which ended up costing me $600. I was initially pretty angry that I would have to pay this amount, because I did have insurance, just not insurance that qualified to allow me to obtain a waiver.

Whether discovering something for the first time, or rediscovering something, it is our attitude towards the process of discovery that is most important, so is our attitude towards the process of discovery really most important? Well, the growth of an individual' is developed by their experiences and response to discovery or rediscovery, which can shape someone’s beliefs and values which is something I learnt from my engagement within texts Go Back To Where You Came From and Distant Lands. Some discoveries may be planned such as the journey experienced by the participants of Ivan O’Mahoney’s documentary Go Back To Where You Came From in 2008. This documentary brings an emotional, transformational, educational and relational experience which…

The purpose of the self-reflection journal is looking back at something that happened to you; how did you analyze the event or idea; what is the consequence or what it means to you and your ongoing progress as a learner. Self-reflection is exclusive component in life that helps us to understanding better of whom we are as individual, and what makes us to be what we are. In the relation to the Kim’s game exercise, I was quiet and contemplative in the beginning. As it was demonstrated visually I began to understand it better.…

I too have similar concerns about a client misinterpreting me, especially in the forensic setting where a client could easily become upset or violent because of it. As Danielle discussed, communication will be the crucial to make sure you and the client are at a mutual understanding. It is also highly important to always be mindful of your client and what they are trying to communicate to you through both verbal and non-verbal interactions. Clinical Interviewing (2015) also discusses facilitative skills such as content reflection and feelings reflection. Reflection skills are used by restating the essence of the subject matter (content reflection) or the client’s emotions (feelings reflection), in order to facilitate responses and/or discussion.…

I attended the “Do You Matter” public speaking event presented by Erick Chavez & Andrea Rascon. This interactive session was to allow participants to explore their privilege and identify how they can use their privilege to advocate for others. Erick gains attention in his introduction by addressing the agenda of the event and provides a coherent design of the presentation. He resumes his presentation with acknowledging community guidelines, such as “… respect, “I”-statements, one voice all ears, [and] confidentiality.” He spoke extemporaneously, mostly speaking from a manuscript.…

This week, as we left class, Angylyne and I discussed the documentary, Precious Knowledge, all the way to the Armitage el stop where we parted ways. It was hard to believe that the education board of Arizona had such a problem with the Latin Studies Program. In high school, I took both AP US History and AP European History. In both of these courses, we learned about radical thinkers and doers and people who decided to revolt against the status quo. Both of these courses are fine for students to learn, it’s fine for us to learn about Napoleon and the American Revolution, so what makes the history of Latin American different?…

Before reading your novel, A Lesson Before Dying, I was always told by my peers, I was never good enough to attend a private school. I begin to believe what was being told since grown up in the public school system of Baltimore was difficult, witnessing fights on a daily basis and students constantly disrespecting the teacher. Many middle schoolers never have the opportunity to even think about private school with little support or income. In eighth grade, your novel was able to help me grasp the concept of perseverance. From my peers, I was able to see their mistakes and correct them in order overcome the difficulties that I faced.…

Reflection on Reconstruction Reconstruction was a period in time where the whole country was forced to rebuild from the Civil War. During reconstruction, the United States’ laws were rewritten, our government was basically built back up from the bottom, and there were questions about whether or not African Americans deserved voting rights. Lincoln originally proposed the idea to have voting rights for all freed blacks. Although many agreed with Lincoln, he was assassinated just 6 days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. The task of rebuilding then fell into Andrew Johnson’s hands.…

Identification of more helpful cognition 1a: Reframing Reframing is a procedure used to “provide the client with alternative cognitions concerning the nature of the habit-change process” (Marlatt & George, 1984). This should reduce the stress levels obtained due specific beliefs ( Vernooij-Dassen, Draskovic, McCleery, & Downs, 2011). When those beliefs and thoughts are replaced or slightly changed, a reduction of stress may happen.…

The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to ALIENATE someone because they are not the same as them, different ETHNITICIY or part of a MINORITY GROUP.…

I enjoyed all of the articles in a way but the one I enjoyed the least was the one I found most beneficial. Shitty first drafts taught me that it is okay to write like an elementary school child because it helps to get all the thoughts out. There was no need to be embarrassed because it’s just a rough draft, why try to make it perfect?. Before I read this article I thought my rough drafts had to be perfect or close to it and that is the reason why I had such a hard time getting started on the essay or even writing an essay. The other three articles I didn’t find them beneficial in any way but interesting.…

My 3-practicum placements have provided me with different, but great learning experiences. I was able to practice what I have been learning in my other college courses in my practicums. In all my practicums, I was able to build positive relationships with each student and teacher-supervisors that I interacted with. I have worked in a grade 4, grade 1, and now a grade 3 classroom. As I assisted in each classroom I was able to learn what my teacher-supervisors would expect from their educational assistant.…

Reflect on what you read in this chapter. In the second chapter, I learned that one needs to extract deep insights from their crucible experiences and make learning from those experiences an ongoing activity. Although leadership experiences are very helpful in shaping one’s personality and leadership style, it is the learning from and reflection on those experiences that actually brings the real “gold” out of an individual. After a person experiences crucible moment, the key to success is to not get stuck or chafed by the ramifications but to find opportunities to learn and grow from those experiences.…
