Reflective Essay On Diction

My experience in writing in a college-level based class has taught me a lot about the strength and weakness of my writing. As a writer, I try to convey as much information as possible to the reader and make sure to clarify all of my statements. But, sometimes I jumble sentences together causing comma splices and really make it hard for the reader to essentially; read. I’m working on sentence structure to help create a flow within my writing. Along with sentence structure, organization is also something that is on my priority list.
Through my past papers I would always see the same common mistakes, but I would also see improvement in areas such as: vocabulary and detailing. For most of my papers I use strong descriptive wording to really put emphasis on my main points/statements. For example, in one of my papers I wrote, “Along with her diction, the author also uses profound tone to pique the interest of the reader wanting them to read more and learn about the myths that took place in his book. Meaning that, the tone of the book was one of education and the purpose of the book was to teach the reader and give them much insight as to what

Being able to understand and to execute a writing style that emits knowledge and shows the proper form of citing was what I learnt from this class. I also understand the different aspects of MLA and APA formatting and what type of prompt would go best for whichever one. Also, from reading the smart thinking reports really helped me to realize what my weaknesses were in my writing and how to turn them into strengths. Using the tutor’s suggestions and guidelines I made sure that each final draft was made to meet the higher expectations of college

This helped me know where I needed to make changes and parts I did well on. Also, other feedback that was helpful was the writing center. I took all of the essays I have done in this class there. But, one in specific that I took there was the Surprising-Reversal Essay. The tutor and I discussed how I can make a better claim in my essay, and ways that I can better my thesis.…

Not only did I have strengths but I also have major weaknesses, and they are coherence and grammar/spelling/punctuation. This semester I have learned how to become a better writer and how to improve on my writing. One of my major strengths in writing is unity, this involved clear thesis statement and topic sentences that supported the thesis statement. My thesis statement would introduce my essay; I then had supporting topic sentences that…

Professor Hamlet taught me a lot about my writing style by commenting and marking my rough draft and/or my final draft, so that I could have a few pointers and tips for the proper formatting, style, and organization of my paper. For example, on my personal narrative at the beginning of the year, Hamlet made a good point that I often tend to repeat myself. Thereafter, I learned and begun trying to avoid unnecessary repetition which has helped improve my grade on the essays. In addition, she noted that I needed to learn to speak more clearly and clarify important thoughts and ideas better. That tip helped me, as well, because I learned to identify, clarify, and note the most important details of my papers.…

The many skills that I have acquired include in-depth research, more through drafts, fluidity of my paper, and better outlines. These skills will help me writing in the future because I need good in-depth research, fluidity, and more through drafts to have a good starting point and will give me a better idea on what I need to add. The most effective thing we did in class was peer reviewing others essays because I got to see different writing styles and different ideas on how to incorporate my evidence better or different choice of words. Even though I have developed good skills for the future, I still have struggles in my writing. This class has helped me to recognize what I struggle with in writing so in the future I can recognize it and improve on my weaknesses.…

Secondly, while creating my writing piece I was reminded how to properly format and structure as well as choose better use of language. Every writing proposal I was presented with had a certain format and structure. For example, the way I would set up a paper explaining a problem versus the way I would set up an argument piece are very different. My use of language though this course has developed by creating sentences that flow nice and smooth. Finally, revising drafts and receiving feedback from my teacher and classmates has helped for the most part.…

It showed us that people can use rhetoric to prove something but that not everything is what it seems. The course has provided great examples to show how rhetoric is used in everyday issues. From taking this course I feel confident enough to move on and take upper level writing courses, Also the course made us write relevant papers that later on proves to help with studies that involve my major more directly. Artifact one shows how the class taught us to be mindful of the consequences of what we write because every action has a reaction that later has positive or negative results. Actifact two shows that we learn from our failures.…

Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life. I would say that my biggest struggle in the W131 class was incorporating my personal thoughts into my work. I say that because, prior to college, I was taught to not include my own thoughts in my writings and to be a neutral informer. However, I now realize that it is a necessity to include my thoughts in each of my writings, because since it is my own, readers want to hear my voice as well as the information. Information gathered, using the proper…

After reading long articles such as Lu et al.’s and Henig’s together in class, I studied some strategies such as focusing on topic sentences, introduction or concluding paragraphs when I am trying to get the gist of the article. Also, I learned the importance of writing summaries because in this course, despite which genres are we working on, we always started with summary since it will help us to understand the main ideas of the articles. Personally, I also sense a change in my writing process after taking this course. Before taking this class, I tend to follow what my brain and thoughts when I write. However, after hearing so many lectures presented in class, I begin to improve my writing from the creating process: I start to care about what will readers anticipate and when writing the papers, I will go back to check the subjects of each sentence in the same paragraph to keep the topic in focus.…

I have learned that it sets up the purpose and direction of every piece of writing and serves to keep me on track and focused on the goal of the paper. I also learned that the thesis can be revised to accommodate the new picture that has evolved through the writing process. This concept seemed very foreign to me during my narrative writing because I assumed that I had to make my paper fit my thesis. My folly became clear when Professor Anderson provided feedback on the initial draft of my narrative essay stating that my thesis was no longer matching my paper and needed revision and focus (Anderson, Personal Conversation). I also worked with the writing center coaches to acquire more aid and clarity on why I could not make my paper to work.…

Writing is one of the most fundamental skills I will always continue working on in order to perfect it.
