Throughout this unit my identity as a writer and my confidence in my writing has continued to develop and improve. From the nerves I felt in regards to writing my first journal entry on the Loan and Muir quote about being a practicing writer, to the latest entry on a current news story I feel as though my writing has vastly improved, not only in its context, but also in my approach. One of the most influential pieces I read on writing came from the communications toolkit. Grellier and Goerke (2014), explained that writing was like a physical activity and in order to perfect your skills you need to do hours of work, as if you were trying to master kicking a football. She also explained that it’s okay to develop your work throughout an essay, …show more content…
When I began writing my journal I was so nervous and I didn’t know where to start. I hadn’t completed a single essay or formal piece of writing since leaving college in 2014, and realized that I may be behind the mark. This lack of confidence made it difficult to answer the first journal, as I was so nervous that I was going to get it wrong. Looking back now it does seem ridiculous as I am not sure how my opinion can be incorrected, especially when I did not even need to show anyone. It did however make me think about what I want to achieve from this task, my opening sentence “it is important to be continually practicing reading and writing as a teacher for many reasons”, made me realize if education is something I truly wish to pursue I would need to continue to improve my knowledge so that I could be prepared to teach students. My journal also highlighted that a lot of what we know about language is learnt from being immersed in culture, this causes language to vary between students and knowledge to constantly be learnt. Even things that seem as simple as TV, literature, and family all influence how we develop English (journal

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

This semester has flown by; however, English 101 has shaped my writing in so many ways. Initially, I did not recognize the ways which rhetoric, technology, research, and collaboration have affected my writing. As I review my work from this semester, it is quite noticeable that my writing has improved a lot since English IV honors. Rhetoric Of all the things I have learned in English 101, rhetoric has continued to be something I use.…

Wow! What a semester and now – with this finial essay – it’s over. I walked into English 111 thinking that I wasn’t going to glean much information, after all I’ve been writing in various forms for a while now. Boy was I wrong. Writing has been my talent since grade school; I couldn’t sing, or dance but I could write, or so I thought. Then, I entered high school and realized that writing required a lot more than it did in middle school. The brisk pace and advanced comprehension skills required for my English three AP course caused my grades to suffer. I have struggled with college level essay writing tremendously, but through hard-work I have been able to write with more ease and finesse than ever before.…

Writing this cover letter is giving me the opportunity to reflect on my writing and review how my writing has improved throughout the semester. Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…

Throughout life, we learn different lessons be it from a teacher such as your parents, guardians, spouse, etc. or just going out and living and collecting experiences. From these, we grow and become the person we are today. We learn to shape us into the person we are and motivate the things we do and believe. I believe heavily in three core things I’ve learned in my life through experience. These core principles are Trust is something earned, sometimes you must think outside the box, and don’t let the bad moments outshine the good.…
