During the fall/winter 2013 terms, my grades were dramatically impacted by the imbalance of school, work, and home life. Before these terms, I was struggling with my own mental health, and sought out help at the York University Counseling and Disability Centre. Where I had four months of counseling with Susan Yorke, while I was attending summer school. In August 2013, I experienced a fire in the York University village on Applebaum Terrace, that lead me to unstable living conditions and being in between York U housing. This traumatic event and the challenges I was facing with previous mental health issues, lead to a lot of anxiety leading into the new school year. Moreover, that same school year, my mother had moved out of province to Saskatchewan where she currently resides. Beginning the 2013-year …show more content…

I also attended the Leadershape retreat, hosted by the Student Community and Leader Development (SCLD), and was sponsored by CHR as well as Founders College. My improvements and commitment since the 2013 terms can be seen not only through academic success but also through my engagement within the York University student community. I am now half way through with Summer Session II and the transition between high school and college has been exciting, but also overwhelming. A few differences I have noticed between my high school classes and my college classes are the size difference, the diversity in students, and the faster pace. In my high school, the average number of students in each class was about 25 to 35 compared to my biggest class now at about 200 students. Additionally, the students in my class before were mainly Hispanic, but now everywhere I look I am able to see people of different cultures and that is something that is so important to me. The reason for this is that, while I did not grow up in a diverse area, I believe that growing up around different people…

Introduction Definitions of intelligence vary among scholars, theorists, and laypersons, due to its multidimensionality. However, intelligence typically involves an individual’s ability to learn from experience and adapt to the environment in which they live. I believe that the construct of intelligence should encompass an individual’s ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal form, to think logically, and to express creativity. Two intelligence tests in which I recently had the opportunity to take and score included the Shipley Institute of Living Scale-2 and the Wonderlic Personnel Test.…

Hardworking, trustworthy, selfless, determined, and helpful… I believe that I have demonstrated these qualities exceptionally throughout my high school career. A glimpse at my exquisite grades that I have kept in four years of challenging classes reveals not only my effort, but my endless determination as well. Despite all of the energy that I directed towards my own success at school, I was always willing to help others who struggled in their classes, especially in math and science. Also, I put time and effort into my extracurricular activities in order to benefit my school’s community. I painted a mural of the Mt. Hope Bridge to beautify a conference room, helped plan countless events for the entire student body, from spirit weeks to…

I had never had an open dialog about race with my son until I started to read this chapter on race and ethnicity. This chapter open my eyes on how many minority women including myself can be discriminated against for being a single or divorced woman raising a child on their own and how we are considered a disadvantage minority at the bottom of the latter. Learning this made me feel uncomfortable because it made me feel so racially categorized. This started the dialog about race with my son, I asked him if he had ever felt discriminated against because of his race or ethnicity, he doesn’t think he had been, but he spoke about a time at Sam’s club gas station while filling up his gas tank, how a sale representative of a glass cleaning product…

Walking into the first day of class and learning more about what the final project would entail, I did feel slightly better but still scared that it was going to be too overwhelming and hard to complete by myself.
