In the article, “Reflective Responses Following a Role Play Simulation of Nurse Bullying”, the authors purposed in their study to evaluate role play simulation as an active learning strategy to address the problem of bullying in nursing. They were investigating how practicing conflict response in a small group setting affected the group participants and if the practice sessions were helpful in building confidence in conflict management. I chose to use this article because I am currently working in a high conflict situation in my own job, and I was looking for insight into whether role-play was a viable option for responding to nurse conflict. They used a qualitative exploratory design. This method sought to explore the feelings and emotions of the participants of the study to determine if a role play simulation is beneficial in nursing students’ educational experiences prior to gaining entry into the workforce as a full-time nurse.
SAMPLE FOR THE STUDY The study sample was conducted at five college campuses of three universities in the Midwest region of the U.S. The student sample was from senior level nursing students who were currently enrolled in community health or leadership courses. There were 333 students who participated. This was a convenient way to create a sample for the study, although the researchers did let the students know that they could opt-out of the study at any time.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE The sample study scenarios were developed and tested prior to creating a study sample of students to participate. Students who agreed to participate had the simulation explained clearly at the beginning. The students were assigned to one of four groups and given a role card to play in the scenario. The role play took five minues, and then the student’s were given an individual reflection sheet that the researchers had developed specifically for the study. In this study, the researchers report that the most common themes reported by the study sample include, feelings of helplessness, aggressive non-verbal communication, aggressive verbal communication, increased negative emotions, increased tension, and a general sense of fear and emotional trauma. The researchers completed the role play scenarios as part of the regular course of study for students in community nursing or leadership modules.
RECORDING OF DATA The data was collected via reflection worksheets, which were then independently reviewed by four researchers to determine what information collected was most important.
