Domestic Violence Reflection

Social work practice has been a part of our culture for over 400 years. Beginning with Charitable Organizational Societies and Settlement Houses, social workers have been tasked with providing services to people from a diverse community in which there could be differences in cultural backgrounds, lifestyle choices, and coping styles. As a practitioner, it is our job to be impartial, nonjudgmental, and objective when intervening with clients. As a woman who believes in equal opportunity for women and seeks to decrease gender-related violence in our homes, domestic violence is an arena that can be problematic for clinicians to remain impartial and objective, not to mention emotionally neutral. Domestic violence can be defined as …show more content…
It would be an area that I am concerned about working with as I venture into furthering my career within the human service field. What I did not realize is that exploring the issue of domestic violence in greater depth, I would discover that it was not the abuse that results in an emotional reaction as before thought. It is the underlying motivations, self-concept, and level of hope that has been generationally engrained that causes the emotional reaction when dealing with clients faced with domestic violence. My view of domestic violence was of weak people (primarily women) who allow their partners to control and dictate their lives. In examining the literature, I have a deeper understanding of the generational implications and impact of domestic …show more content…
Clients need to be viewed critically, objectively, and most importantly individually. Patterns exist in every arena that I could explore within the social work field. However present the patterns may be, each client needs to be viewed through their life experiences, family history, and life structure. My professional growth will focus on this area – despite the population view – so that I do not group clients into a pattern that may or may not exist. In addition, I plan to spend extra time working with women in a domestic violence shelter to be able to understand their experiences on a different level. Transference and countertransference are two aspects of this field that will always be present at some level. It is key for my success to be able to find and process any feelings that arise when working with a client. To be able to understand a client’s story prior to creating my clinical view will be created through focusing on a correct assessment and evaluation process. My choices for electives and, or research opportunities will focus on the area of assessment and diagnosis so I can develop a reliable clinical plan, and not allowing my preconceived ideas dictate treatment. In addition, if I continue to struggle in this area, I will seek outside guidance with a mentor or therapist to decide if any additional roots to the reaction the population of domestic

I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…

SALP: Domestic Abuse Program Evaluation Christopher M. Nima San Jose State University Social workers have long confronted the multiple issues that coexist within a household filled with domestic violence. The problems that can fester in a household filled with domestic violence range from child endangerment to alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, services for the victims of these types of family violence have been splintered, forcing single women or families to go to multiple agencies for support. This issue can become ever more complicated when the victims come from immigrant households who are less familiar with American culture, laws, and services available to them. The focus of the program evaluation is to propose human…

In "Why Domestic Violence Victims Don't Leave," Leslie Morgan Steiner described her personal story as a survivor of domestic violence. As a twenty-two year old Harvard graduate working for a Fortune 500 company, Steiner's boyfriend held a gun to her head and threatened to kill her. Yet, she remained in the relationship because she felt she was a "strong woman who could help him face his demons" from abuse at the hands of his stepfather. Eventually, she left the abusive and dangerous relationship. Not having exposure to domestic violence, Steiner's messages educated me on the facts of the issue and faces of the victims.…

However, it will be adapted as I gain institutional knowledge. • As a Case Management Supervisor, I would aim to gain an understanding of the core metrics for the effective performance of Human Options. Comprehensive metrics would consist of both quantifiable and qualitative measures.…

One of my beliefs that could be in conflict with a social work value or ethical standard is my feeling towards the people that decide to stay in a domestic violence relationship. I believe that no one should get abused in a relationship. A couple should stay in a relationship because they are in love and not because they do not have the financial resources to be on there own or fear for their lives. Domestic violence to me consists of physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse.…

In this paper I will argue that social Learning theory and the Feminist theory best explains why violence occurs. The Social Learning theory is a well known theory for explaining why Violence occurs. The Social Leaning theory argues that people learn how to behave by being exposed or experienced violence (Jasinski, YEAR) I strongly agree with this theory as it refers to explaining why violence occurs in adulthood for various reasons such as intergenerational, media, and culture. Intergenerational transmission of violence suggests that violence is learned through the socialization in the family (Jasinski, YEAR).…

How this Awareness will Impact my Ability to Counsel To improve my awareness towards domestic violence, gaining more knowledge on the topic would help me to assist the development of the issue, preventing the actions that have been done against individuals. The fundamental role of a counsellor, in any situation, is to collect information from the victims or respondents and then try to understand their views and attitudes towards the issue proposed. By doing this, it would create an opportunity for the counsellor to produce solutions to help improve the issue. Raising the awareness of domestic violence has made me realise that in order for me to become a competent counsellor in this field, I’d have to interact with the client, prepare follow-up…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…

Hello Dr. Robyn and Class, There are several healthcare partnerships in my community that have influenced nursing practice. Advocacy programs and shelters have tried to provide essential services to victims of domestic violence and abuse. Advocates for domestic violence and abuse do face some barriers such as working with individuals from different backgrounds as well as accessing services. Hence, domestic violence and abuse advocates focus not only on victim services such as providing safe housing in the community, but also on prevention through community education and policy establishment.…

Rationale and Purpose: Domestic violence is a topic that is rarely discussed within our society, yet is more common than one would believe. We often read of domestic violence being more dominant among women, however, women are not the only individuals who battle with domestic violence issues. Domestic violence victims are often ashamed to tell anyone of the violence for fear of making the situation worse, fear of how their spouse will react or they have a false sense of hope that things will get better. The sole purpose of this project is to; 1) examine what causes domestic violence? , 2) discuss the various effects that domestic violence has on individuals and 3) examine which demographics (race, gender, etc.) are most likely to become victims…
