II. What is History?

History is a record of events and times, especially in connection with the human race. Everything in the universe has a history. It is critical to inquire about the particular brand of history being used as a framework in either written pieces or conversation. Traditional history, or rather the discipline of history, was founded by Leopold von Ranke. Ranke believed that its was a historian’s job while studying the past to be somewhat detached from it. This is necessary in order to reconstruct history as it was, because there exists a duty to be true to the past before all else. Also, history involves interdisciplinary work, not just looking at the context of the times, but working with an understanding of the broader perspective. In the end

Self-Assessment of Writing Progress The writing process is one which takes time to master. Just like sports or a professional trade, one must practice consistently, in order to become more proficient. My own journey with the writing process has become more sophisticated, though there is always room for improvement. My biggest problem in creating effective arguments is allowing myself enough time to revise my essays, being clear with my ideas on paper, and bringing my writing skills up to par with my presentation skills. Just like anything in life, when you put in the time usually your work is rewarded. That reward could be a high grade or getting an important research piece published. For instance, in my first writing assignment for Senior Seminar, I did not allow time to revise my paper and Dr. Lappas was generous enough to give me a 70% on it, which may have been lenient. His comments on my paper included “I stopped marking grammar here,” and “ This reads more like a journal entry than a formal paper.” My issues with grammar can also be seen in the class Italy and the Holocaust. Dr. Nowak heavily critiqued my word choice, and sentence construction. This was feedback I found

Hillocks offers many valid arguments in Chapter 7. He argues that "argument should be part of the educational program at early stages" (200). I agree with his statement because argumentative writing is not taught until middle and high school, and I feel that the younger students are when they learn the skills, the more opportunities they have for improvement.…

    Rhetoric Argument

I first want to address the stress of my first attempt at writing for an audience who specializes in the art of writing and argumentation. With that being said, the three readings I am focusing on this week (McNabb, Brooke, and Fleming) did precise job of explaining what exactly the art of rhetoric entails and the nature of Rhetoric and Composition as a field of study. I was fascinated with Fleming’s explanation of argument and the origins and models for arguing. I am of the general public who think that one “has” an argument rather than one “makes” an argument. In this way, I have always placed a negative connotation on arguing, but to think of the journal articles I will eventually write as a form of argumentation, or as an attempt to move…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

History is indeed a story, not specifically about women or men, but about all those who have left some imprint on the age in which they lived. History can be defined most simply as the story of human actions in past times. Those actions tend to fall into broad patterns, regardless of whether they occurred yesterday or 5,000 years ago. Physical needs, such as the need for food, water, and breathable air, dictate some actions. Others stem from emotional and intellectual needs, such as religious belief or the search for immortality.…

History teaches how a single event can either hurt or protect the nations of the world. It has given light to what kind of minds run the world, and what power does when possessed by the wrong kinds of people. Through books and research, history is taught so catastrophes can never be repeated as long as everyone heeds to these warnings. For example the Holocaust, most would not want that to happen again; a whole race should not have to suffer at the hands of one ruler. Having hard grueling work with the risk of being shot just for pleasure, and even the medical experiments that would have no boundaries to what could be done.…

Knowing how to construct an impressive and persuasive argument is an essential device towards essay writing. Developing and defending your ideas is the key aspect of essay writing and to know how to perform that is a useful credential towards one's writing. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

This term is the first term that I’ve been back in school in over five years. When I started this class I wasn’t sure if I would remember all of the mechanics of good essay writing, even though I took many writing courses in High School, and my major is in English. Throughout the term I was reminded of some of the smaller bits of the proper writing process that I had either forgotten or had pushed to the side when writing creatively. I can not say that my writing process has drastically changed during this term, but I feel like it was a good refresher course for me. In this course, my experience with the writing process has become more polished, clean, and easier to adhere to.…
