Reflective Essay: Writing Analysis

When writing throughout the year I have learned many things. I believe I have grown as a writer, especially in the maturing of my vocabulary and sentence structure. Looking back on these works of writing, I would have to say my favorite piece was the argumentative research paper. This was a great essay because it was a free range topic and I got to write about my own interests. Also, I got to do an abundance of research on something I enjoy. I felt that I was more likely to put forth more effort in an essay that I picked. On the other hand, I did not enjoy writing the essay on Brave New World because it was a book that I had difficulty understanding, and I did not enjoy reading the novel. I also believe the book had many flaws being written so far in the past the author, Aldous Huxley did not realize that things like film would go out of style. The piece I am the most proud of would probably be my college admissions essay. This piece was difficult because I was forced to make the essay concise, while …show more content…
I realized I constantly rushed to finished pieces without going back to look them over. I believe that simple mistakes should have been caught in while reading over the essays. I missed many simple punctuation mistakes and have learned from those mistakes. My drafting process has remained unchanged I normally do not write rough drafts I do research and just begin writing. I do write my essays over a course of a few days to keep my ideas free-flowing. My revision process was poor, but developed as the year went on. At first I would not revise my essays and always do them last minute. This would not leave time for revision and allow stupid mistakes to be left on my essays. The most difficult thing about writing for me has always been punctuation, mainly commas and text with quotations. I constantly have people review these flaws, as well as essay readers

A reoccurring problem I came across was that I would constantly reuse certain adjectives to describe things. It made my papers sound repetitive and uninteresting as I went through the information I wanted to present forth. I also noticed that my writing style had become extremely formal compared to my older writing pieces from the semester before. But as I continued to write, I made a conscious effort to check for these problems and find new ways to write about these topics. The revisions I made to my papers helped to better understand my writing style and make small improvements upon it over the semester.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

My writing process coming into junior year was quite flawed and would go moderately like this: I would try and start with some hook that at least sounded like it related to the topic I was assigned. I then added a thesis that did not sound like total trash that included exactly what I planned to discuss. As I wrote the rest of my essays, I would sometimes realize there was something I felt added to the argument’s appeal, and after adding it to the body paragraphs, I summed it up in a couple words and squeezed it into my thesis. That was about the maximum amount of revising I would do for my essays. My decently crafted essays contained simple diction with a few SAT words I remembered while writing thrown in awkwardly.…

After reading my first writing project I noticed two things, first I could improve some sentences and go more into detail with some topics. I could fix some sentences to have the essay flow better for anyone reading it. I felt as if I jump from one sentence to another and left out some details that would be helpful to the reader. At the points where I highlighted some confusion, I will go back and fix them. I didn't hear any serious errors that needed to be fixed, but found spots where the paper could be improved.…

Therefore, I have grown accustomed to critiquing while trying to develop the content of my papers. Although proper grammar and effective word choice are crucial to writing a cohesive piece, worrying about it early made the process slow and exhausting. I procrastinated to avoid the hours of sitting in front of my screen, rephrasing the same sentence until I was satisfied before starting the process over again with the next sentence. However, in this chapter, I learned that I could be patient with myself during this early stage. Drafting could be the initial phase of the process, or it could be preliminary to the actual writing.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…
