Reflective Essay: Why Acting Makes Me Who I Am

Improved Essays
In acting one I feel like I learned why more than what I intended. I think what most people and I would have thought is that acting is learning about how to play other people. But what we all can learn is that acting is way more then that. Acting is knowing that you can be anything in this whole entire universe even if this universe sees you as a nobody. I feel like everyday in this class I have a little bit more about myself. Well my teenage self that is. I’ve also learned what type of people I would like and wouldn’t like in my life. I remember being little and believing that acting was only for mature people, when really you have to be kinda the opposite to be in this line of work. There is this quote I read awhile back saying something on the lines of “Acting is a childish job. You have to pretend to be someone else and at the same time you have to see yourself. I didn’t fully understand until now. …show more content…
I’ve made up my mind about what I atleast intend to be as a person. I’m still seventeen years old so I don’t really know just yet. I feel like as a typical high school student I’m being treated as a child with limited freedoms but will be pushed into the role as an adult as soon as I get my diploma. You know like knowing how am I going to contribute to society when I’m no longer in an assigned role. I only have one more year as a high school student so I’m really thinking about my future. If i had to say where I fit in, I would say that I am here experience life and what it all has to give me. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe I’m here to be someone’s light or someone’s demise. I honestly have no clue. We all have our own place in life but I feel like we all don’t know what they

Personally, I think my constant strive to be better at what I love to do says a lot about me and shows my determination. My parents have always said the talent will only get you so far and that hard work and dedication is what will get you all the way. Being a part of theater for about 5 years now has also taught me a lot about empathy and working as a team. Learning how to embody and live as someone else for just a little while has made me a more empathetic person outside of the theater and made me more understanding to those who live differently than I do or have different beliefs and values. Rehearsing and performing with the same group of people for 4 weeks to even a few months can bring people quite close.…

Throughout our life there are moments where it is detrimental to our sense of self that we feel as though we belong. This could be when we are growing up as a child, which would be arguably one of the most important times of the development of our sense of self, and perhaps as we are teenager’s as we try to fit in socially, and then finally the transition from adolescent to adult as we try to gain a sense of who we are in this life and what our purposes are. This can often be considered as the last major stage of change in our identity. These life stages are vastly influential in our sense of self and most importantly, whether or not we feel as though we belong in these times of our life. From looking at this it is ridiculously easy to understand…

It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. Just a few years ago, my dad would always tell me stories about when he turned 18 years old. He would tell me that in the near future I would have to start paying taxes, sign up for the selective service, and have to learn how to cooperate with everyone in the work field that I wish to pursue. I think to myself “How will continuing my education prepare me to discharge my civic duty to my community and my country?” I have experienced myself going through different stages in my life. Acting is about you either make it or you don't. Acting has always been my passion ever since I was a little girl . I just love the feeling of portraying another character's life and story and relived it yourself and make it your own .…

Creating an effective performance of stage combat or straight acting involves a great deal of preparation and thought. There are many elements that come together to create the show and as a performer there are several things that can be done to make the rehearsals leading up to it an effective use of time. Preparing physically and mentally for every rehearsal, spending some time discovering the character’s world, and being open to discussions and changes throughout the process. These are some of the things an actor can do to ease the stress of those around them and they can also aid the team in creating a worthwhile production. When one is in a show or working in an acting class, it is always a good idea to come warm, ready to work, and prepared.…

I once was young boy with big dreams; I wanted be be a “star” and be on the big screen. How great would it be having hundreds of people yelling your name and taking your picture? All I ever wanted was to help, inspire, and encourage others; having people wanting to be you and being moved by your actions and person. My real start to acting came a little later than I hoped, it wasn't until 2010 when I realized I really wanted to act, I remember the day so clearly; I was downstairs doing some of my “grade 6 school work” when my mom called me upstairs to show me an ad in the paper for munchkin auditions for The Wizard of Oz at Theatre Ancaster.…

What does theatre mean to me? As I review the questions provided for me to include in my goal statement, I feel lucky to express how theatre is unique to me and how I structure my everyday life around the dramatic arts. Anytime I act, I relish in the opportunity to be a leader, to help people, and to accomplish my actions with confidence. I started off with this philosophy at an early age and have not forgotten about it since. In my opinion, acting is not solely about the individual’s performance, but about how an individual actor can use their confidence and passion to impact other actors, enhance a production, and inspire the audience.…

    Nelson Mandela Quote

Nelson Mandela once said that “There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Although, Nelson Mandela isn’t an actor and doesn’t even have anything to do with the show business he still is an inspiration to many. I relate to this quote in many ways; one way I relate to this quote is that I feel that anyone can accomplish what they want if they try harder. Also, people shouldn’t see themselves as less then what they are, rather they should see themselves as greater. By auditioning for DSA I feel like I am not going to settle with where I am, instead I want to become a greater, stronger, and more intellectual person.…

A recent assignment required an examination of two role plays; investigating different viewpoints, considering the concept of freedom of speech, then selecting a respondent and writing a letter to the editor from this point of view. The role play topics were controversial, and I encountered ambivalence when selecting the response roles. In retrospect, I realise this was probably because I had preconceived views on the role play subject matters. However, when looking at the bigger picture: the right for free speech, and the right to live without fear of being traumatised by others, the assignment was more approachable.…

For my piece of practical work I had to frequently switch characters and successfully convey the differences between each part I played through the use of my acting skills. In the earlier stages of rehearsals I was concentrating on my role as a student and my role as teacher. In one scene I immediately change role from that of a teacher to a student. When playing my role of Emily Griffin a year 11 student I first put on an accent to correspond to the area my character was living in and therefore used a South London accent. I was consistently changing the tone of my voice dependant on the way my character was feeling at the time.…

As actors, we must come to the realization that we are not in a stable career field. With that being said, it is in our best interest to have a backup plan of other possibilities in the arts so that we do not find ourselves wailing in the idea that we went to college for nothing. I am studying theatre in the performance aspect, concentrating in acting. I am actually leaning more towards the entertainment field rather than the artistic field, which does not require any sort of theatre education on a collegiate level, however I am here because while I want to be a screen actress, I do love theatre and I need the education in case I fail in my hopes and dreams. If that unfortunate occurrence comes true, my “Plan B” is to either be a director or a playwright.…
