Reflective Essay: What I Learned In My Writing Class

Improved Essays
During my time in the class I have written a variety of papers that I had little to no experience in. By the end of the semester I have gained crucial experience in not only writing papers, but employing different writing and work strategies during class. The first essay that we were required to write for class was a domain essay. The domain essay was about our major, what experience we have with it, and what we hope to gain from it. This was the first paper of the class and also the first paper I had to write in a while. It displays all the writing skills that I have been taught previously. As we continued to practice and learn how to write papers, my writing has made a noticeable change. I see this change whenever I look back at the domain essay. …show more content…
It was the expository research report. While I have written a couple of research papers in high school, the quality of those when compared to the one I wrote recently is drastic. The structure of my paper improved and my citations were well done. Not only did my writing skills change, they also improved. Part of this improvement was because of the documentation style sheet. It was when I learned how to do citations for three writing formats. They were MLA, APA, and CMS. The writing style I used for the research paper was CMS, or Chicago Manual Style 16th ed. I had never written using this format before, but after writing the expository research report I felt comfortable with it. This was a good experience because in my field, electrical engineering, I would be using that writing style for any papers I

Exercising My Writing Skills Writing is evolving by the day in the English language, in other words communication is evolving on the daily since writing is our main source of communication. Learning how to write the English language in an academic setting has been one of my greatest accomplishments as a scholar, despite the fact that, I am still learning new skills daily on how to improve my writing. Even though, I am not the best the writer, I have gained enough strength in my writing to separate me from the average writer. In other words, the best way to improve on something is by practicing, and that is a lesson writing papers has taught me. One of my greatest skills as a writer in my opinion is being able to expand on a topic.…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

Dust accumulated on this object, as it had sat for a couple years in a bookcase tucked away from sight. As the remnants of dust were blown and then wiped off its cover, it began to be reread again. My experience with taking this English Composition one course was like dusting off a dirty book, it meant having to uncover this book of knowledge after being out of school for two years. This book represented in my head, my mind after being out of school for some time, you experience day to day life and slowly forget about writing in general unless it’s basic and needed for work. Dusting off my hypothetical book was learning to annotate again, learning to be a writer and a student again and to see with both eyes open my mistakes.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…

After receiving my grade and feedback I realized my sentences were choppy and not well put together. When I submitted my paper the second time not only did I receive a better grade but also a better understanding of what my papers should look like and what the content should include. I really enjoyed writing this paper, because it allowed me to write about something I have a passion for. I really enjoy writing narratives, but I believe the easiest and best paper I wrote in this class would be essay two. This is when we chose an advertisement and analyzed the details about it.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

A writing experience that has stood out the most for me was when I was a sophomore in High School. There was a girl in my class who I wasn't so fond of who one day decided to announce to everyone that she had begun to write her own stories. She showed everyone pieces of her writings expecting to get nothing but compliments and be to deemed the class writer, but when she finally showed me her work I cringed at how deplorable it was. The stories had no clear perspective of whether it was written in first person or third person view, some of the simplest of words were spelled wrong, and many words were used in the wrong context. The class didn't seem to care for her stories so they just gave standard responses with no words for…

From these, we grow and become the person we are today. We learn to shape us into the person we are and motivate the things we do and believe. I believe heavily in three core things I’ve learned in my life through experience. These core principles are Trust is something earned, sometimes you must think outside the box, and don’t let the bad moments outshine the good.…
