Reflective Essay: Truth In Scholarship

Decent Essays
In my opinion, truth in scholarship is applying your voice to express the most personable experiences in one’s life and to authorize your words to resonate in the minds and hearts of the audience. Your words must convey a message. As such, the truth will assist the writer in becoming honest with thyself. We must start “by looking inward, not outward…” (Nash, 2004, p. 27). We cannot let others see a “fabricated us” in the sense we always had it all together. We were born a genius. We never had any trials or obstacles to overcome. But instead allow our flaws to become detectable.
People want acceptance and validation. “I don’t see why it’s necessary to dig so deeply into the marrow of my own life.” (Nash, 2004, p. 26) because telling the truth

In the essay "The Insufficiencey of Honesty," the Stephen L. Carter divides his essay into three major categories. One category mentioned in his essay was titled Telling Everything You Know. In this category, he discussed how being completely honest can be negitave because it can cause harm and place burdens on others. I completley agree with this statement because there are some things that should not be mentioned in respect of other people's emotions. Ultimately, this shows that while an individual is honest, they may not be displaying integrety at the same…

Nation of Lies Why do we lie to others, but expect others to be honest with us? Today in society, lies have embodied the lives of many to the point where it has become a natural part of our lifestyle. Lying has become a natural habit for us, it has become a factor in how we carry out our lives. Whether we may have lied in consideration of how others may feel, or if it was because we did not want to carry out something we were assigned, lying has become so natural to us that we cannot distinguish it from what the truth really is. Lying has become a cultural cancer, as Stephanie Ericsson states in her essay, “The Ways We Lie”, that we have come to the point where we accepted it into our society.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

Reflection Paper The HLSC 1701U course focuses heavily on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, an APA writing manual for students and educators. Johnson guided the students on different aspects of the writing process like applicable in-text citations, proper formatting and maintaining academic integrity. At the beginning of the semester, I had a lot of anxiety over the impending course work, but now I can truthfully say, this is one of my easiest classes. Johnson made it excessively easy for the students to write their final essay with the help of his informative lesson plan.…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

Ideologies in the Mirror According to the political compass test we were assigned to take, I am a left libertarian; both my economic and social beliefs fell left of the scale. Given what I know about ideologies thus far, I 'm not surprised by these results. I 've often tended to side with more liberal sides of debates and have taken a few of these tests before in previous history classes. Whenever I do take tests like these, I often reflect back on why I hold the views that I do.…

veryday life, conflicts arise that pose the decision of whether or not to tell the truth. In the New York Times article titled “How Honesty Could Make You Happier”, Judi Ketteler explores the effect being truthful has on her own morale and happiness/satisfaction. Ketteler’s 6-year-old daughter once claimed that telling truths made her feel “gold in her brain”. Inspired by this, Ketteler decided to test her daughter’s theory by keeping a truth journal. For several months, she recorded any instances that prompted a choice between truth and lie, and then noted how telling the truth made her feel.…

This concept is the apex of the various concepts and an ideology discussed thus far, and is the central focal point I will use to synthesis the relevant knowledge I have obtained at this juncture in this course infusing a bit of my own personal experiences. I outwardly focused my discussions on a region, the Southeast region of the US, and a homogeny and demographic, a predominately black, poverty stricken community of that region.…

Honesty is a valued moral character in many ethnic and cultures, in the same way that deception is frowned upon, or even condemned in several situations. However, everybody must have at least once found themselves in a circumstance where telling the truth is more damaging than lying. Jeff Hancock stated, “But [butler lies] are very special. They use ambiguity that comes from using technology. You don 't know where I am or what I 'm doing or who I 'm with.…

One day a little schoolboy forgot to do his homework and was scared to tell his teacher the truth. The teacher was taking up the homework and asked the child, “Where is your homework?” Instead of telling his teacher that he did not have the homework completed and accepting responsibility for his actions, the child replied, “My dog ate my homework.” This specific lie is something that has been used as an excuse from school children for years on end to avoid the consequences that come with forgetting to do their homework. Lies have become a dominant part of everyday life in today’s American society, good and bad.…

When we were deciding on our interview questions (as seen in part 6), one of the first things that we had to address was our own personal biases towards our applicants, as we all have varying relationships with them. When we wrote the questions, we intentionally wrote them open-ended and with as minimal guidance as possible so that we could gauge their pure responses without unfair coaching. The way the questions were written was the exact way we recited them to the applicants for uniformity reasons. All of the measures we took to ensure that these were fair interviews resulted in us coming up with a mathematical way to grade the applicants responses. Because of the biases we were aware of, we decided that a mathematical approach would best choose our applicant, as opposed to debating and/or deciding subjectively; thusly, objectivity was paramount to our interview question development, delivery, and in grading each and every applicant’s response.…

My definition of honesty is being true and sincere in what you are saying and/or doing. Honesty is not necessarily equal to being a good person, however, honesty is a matter of being truthful towards your actions. For my one of my classes, I had an assignment where I had to be honest about questions according whether or not I am a good student; such as whether or not I write papers the day before they are due, or whether or not I cram the day before an exam, etc. Being honest in this assignment was hard, due to the fact that honesty about whether or not you crammed an easy the day before it was due, is not something you want to tell your teacher. Doing this assignment I was very mindful about being honest, despite the fact that it would lower…
