My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Idaho Governors Cup Scholarship Application I am a native Idahoan, straight and foremost which means that I have had the privilege of being raised in great place that has taught me much. From being able to kayak to knowing how to be a part of a community that is what I learned being an Idahoan is, However, what it should also mean to be an Idahoan is to be educated. An Idahoan should strive for more such as earning a degree or receiving an education beyond that of getting a high school diploma. The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

Midway through my first semester at Rice University, I was failing all my classes. Between my parents moving our family across the country two weeks before school began, facing a constant shortage of money due to financial hardships and struggling to form connections at my new school, I failed to fully commit to my studies. Turning my grades around began with reaching out to my father who advised me to commit to an activity I enjoyed outside of my classes. I began taking part in extracurricular activities, revamped my diet and started exercising regularly. I decided to reach out to more people, and created a support group around myself.…

When I think about Monroe College, I think about chance, growth, and achievement. For quite some time, I did some research on the college and I received nothing but good experiences about the college. For example, I have a coworker that graduated from the criminal justice program with a 3.8 GPA and most importantly, she dropped out of high school, received her GED, and thought that her only options was community college, trade school and a minimum wage jobs. Knowing that Monroe believed in her and gave her the proper guidance; compelled me to apply. Right now I'm at Hostos community college, majoring in early childhood education.…
