Girls with braces
The ones who sat on the first bench
The ones who chilled with imaginary friends
The weirdos
The freaks
The nerds
They were all round pegs in square holes;
Round pegs that fit into square holes.
But I,
I was a round peg too gigantic to fit in;
Too colossal, too enormous; too elephantine;
TOO FAT to fit into a square hole.
My mother said it didn’t matter;
At least I wasn’t confined within the four walls of a square;
But how could she understand the pressure?
The desire of being accepted,
The fantasy of being cool,
A craving so strong that I created an imaginary square hole for myself.
Within this imaginary square;
I dreamed of the future.
