Reflective Essay: The Value Of Community Service

Community service is an activity carried out by a person or group of people that addresses human and community needs. Although some people make think it’s just another chore to do, it helps bring out the best in people by forcing them to take a role of responsibility and leadership while helping others at the same time. It also teaches good morals and values such as honesty, gratefulness, and respect; values that will help guide me throughout the rest of my life. Over the summer my PLTW engineering teacher sent out an email asking for help with the new robotics kits for the newest class offered at the high school, Principles of Engineering. Since I was going to take the class in a few months I thought it would be a fun opportunity to help out and see what we were going to be working with. The head of the organization had sent an email to my head coach asking for help. I was free that day and volunteered to spend a couple hours there. While the adults grilled the food, we worked the shaved ice station making ice, adding the flavors, and collecting money. I really liked being able to put a smile on a a little girl’s face by making her a rainbow snow cone. Overall I had a lot of fun and got to know some of the girls from the volleyball program better that I didn’t really know before. Community service isn’t something that can be forced upon a person, for it to matter and have an affect on them it must be done freely. Although the job can still be completed if you don’t care or don’t want to try, the overall effect on the community is not even close to the same amount that is done by someone who is passionate about what they are doing.
