Reflective Essay: The Strength Of My Writing

Improved Essays
This class has been very difficult for me, but I have benefited a ton from taking it. Overall I think that a strength of mine when writing was that I had background knowledge on all of my topics. Some of my weaknesses were that I would be too wordy at times and my grammar was not always the best. It was difficult for me to write lengthy papers since I would run out of things to talk about. My favorite essay was the description essay because I enjoyed getting to go that in depth with details. I also liked getting to write a shorter essay because that way I could put all of my time and effort into making the page and a half the best it could be. Peer response groups were, for the most part, pretty helpful to my writing process. The only thing that would frustrate me was when people would mark something wrong on my paper that was not wrong. Other than that, the groups were a huge help with coming up with ideas and fixing little mistakes. I liked how everyone would have different opinions on portions so I …show more content…
For most of my essays, I decided to wait until the last minute to write them since that is what I do with most of my homework. I do not typically work well in class because I cannot focus with any distractions. This eliminated considerable chunks of time that I could have progressed in my writing. If I would have put more effort into the essays right away I think that I could have worked out most of the minor errors that were still present in some of my final drafts. Voice and style were rather prevalent in my essays. My writing style is not too formal; I like to write as though I am talking to one of my friends. Since I am pretty relaxed and simple, I enjoyed writing the process analysis essay since it was easy to write about the steps to do something. I would say that my description essay has the strongest voice out of all of my essays because I had to describe everything by how I believed it would

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Final Portfolio Cover Letter I have always enjoyed writing so I feel like classes such as these help me more than others. Before I finish college I hope to take some sort of creative writing class as I feel as I haven’t given that opportunity much in recent years amidst constant essays on topic that I do not care about. As a writer I believe my biggest strength is that when I start writing I can keep writing almost until I have run out of things to write about or am interrupted for some reason. I also feel as though I’m very good at writing about things I am passionate about and if I care about a topic you will be able to clearly tell when reading what I wrote.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

I hope I learn to write a great essay before the end of this writing course. I had been out of school for nearly forty two years and I believed I knew everything that I needed to know about writing. The first in class writing assignment showed me that I knew diddly-squat about writing, I never knew that there were so many different types of essay. The first essay I wrote was a bomb and opened my eyes to what is needed to write a really good essay. It helped when the teacher would group us into four or five and we would use the time for brainstorming or group discussion on different topic.…

Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. Thus, I was forced to leave my comfort zone for writing and to challenge myself, which in turn helped to improve my writing. Through my experiences with writing essays in high school, I have noticed a few strengths and weaknesses with my writing. My main strength is the structure of my writing. I know what to say when I need to so I don’t tend to ramble on to tangents. Another strength I have is writing about topics that I love because I can just spill all my thoughts out onto paper and never have to worry about having enough sentences.…

In that time, I could not give up because that was my dream to study in an American university, so I tried hard to learn methods of writing. Also, I had other problems and I still have when I write essays including grammar. These affected my grades and they continue to affect my future grades if I do not do anything about them. The good thing is that I am already working hard to avoid them as much as I can. My UCR teachers had a big part in making me better at writing essays.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

When I took the AP Language and Composition course my junior year of high school, I scored a three on the exam. As a student who always enjoyed English and did well in the subject, this was a low point, but . However, I still loved literature and knewI still wanted to become an English major at college. That is how I ended up in Dr. Clermont-Ferrand’s “Introduction to English Studies” class. Looking back at my work throughout this course, I noticed that I have a slight preference in applying outward theories over inward theories and that my strength lies in writing clear thesis statements, but I do need to work on my proofreading, transition sentences, and time management.…
