Reflective Essay: The Role Of Personal Development In High School Sports

High school sports may not seem like a topic from which to discuss personal development, but it was the catalyst for me. I had not been truly challenged in school until I tried out for a JV sport. When I was a freshman, I tried out for JV softball with a slight overconfidence in my abilities. Consequently, the morning that results were posted, and my name was not on the page (surely, a misprint?), brought feelings of disappointment and disbelief. I tried brushing it off, forgetting about it by 3pm. But on my way to the bus, my would-be coach pulled me aside. That conversation marked the beginning of not only my baseball success, but a battle with failure.

"You caused the coaches a lot of trouble last night." - what a great start! "We talked for a good while about your attitude." He went on to describe what he saw as a determined freshman "surrounded by 13 opportunities." He invited this impressionable 14-year-old to practices, offering words of encouragement. So, I joined as a redshirt with my sights set on next season.

When it came around, I went in front of new coaches and players as a Varsity-eligible sophomore. Yet novelty soon yielded to déjà vu: the same excited friends, and the same misprint on the roster. But one thing was different. This time, I took the initiative to seek out my coach. Somewhat surprised to have a cut player come and ask

In preparation, I signed up for Strength; I took Little League games seriously; and I considered tryouts a proving ground. Sure enough, there were no more misprints. My name appeared on the list, and I was issued a Dragon uniform. Even though I was no starter (my tournament average was 0 for 0), I served my role as a "strategic pinch-runner," stealing bases where needed, and the opposition's signs when benched. Regardless, I was in the huddle with everyone else when we swept the conference, I was on stage with the gold medal, and I was even in the team Facebook

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

As soon as my dad could put a glove on my hand the learning process began and after my first practice I fell in love with the game. From that point on all I did was softball, it was my safe place, my other home and the one thing I knew I could do something great in. I would always want to just throw with my dad or my brother, as little as I was I wanted to show them that I could catch the hard balls they threw. Of course though, I couldn’t but I was in the process of getting there.…

According to Merriam-Webster, a coach is defined as, “a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games.” A coach is much more than what Merriam-Webster defines it as. To be a coach is to be a leader, a mentor, and a role model. A coach must set the standard and lead by example. Five years ago, I began volunteer coaching my son’s youth sports teams.…

How am I to show this coach that I’m worth starting with such little time? I transferred to Apex Friendship second semester, my sophomore year right before the start of the lacrosse season. Every player had months of pre-season workouts to show the coach their skills while I had only two weeks to prove I was better than the players he had already been watching for months. I put in as much work that was possible by running fast, playing hard and smart. I needed this coach to see that I had the IQ as well as the ability to play at a higher level than the other guys.…

To Play or Not To Play???“Put Me in Coach” When people reminisce about their high school years, fond memories of being at the height of fitness, spending countless hours with teammates, and playing in the “Big Game” are often treasured. However, some students at St. Anthony High School are choosing not to be involved in the athletic program for social and academic reasons. As a result, many are missing out on one of the most important aspects of their high school career. Although some believe that participation in high school athletics is a roadblock towards academic success and a satisfying social life, students should play at least one sport throughout high school because they will develop critical life skills and increase their physical…

When I was 15, I was cut first round at High Performance Minnesota tryouts. High Performance is the tryout program that eventually selects the best players in the country to play on the USA U18 National Team. When there is no NHL to look forward too as a woman, I strived to play college hockey and represent the United States of America at the national level. This cut was devastating, it ended many of my friends’ hockey careers, but it only pushed me to improve. Every practice and every game I played was my fullest effort to out work every player in Minnesota.…

By doing this I finally conquered the amazing feat that I faced. When the coach talked to us individually the next season he said that I got the spot as starting varsity catcher. Partway through my first Junior Varsity baseball practice, it was clear that I was the least qualified player on the team. Still learning the basics of baseball, I was pulled aside by the coaches and told that they were still uncertain of their decision and that they would be monitoring my progress to determine eligibility. As soon as I got home, I studied baseball through any video, started attending every practice offered, and constantly requested one-on-one coaching sessions. My coaches slowly took notice of my commitment and my rapidly developing skill set in baseball.…

Chances are high that more people have been faced by a trial, not the kind in court, but the kind where they are competing to show prowess in something. If they have succeeded in the trial they have felt accomplished or if you failed you just stay angry for a little bit at first and then you just think what you could of done or done better. Better yet, you failed even though you (thought) you did everything perfect or at least 95% right and you’re just waiting on the verdict like “man, I’ve got this one in the history books 100% and there’s no way I could've failed.”…

The ball is one with the birds as it cuts through the hot summer air, towards the outfield fence. Trying as hard as it can to escape the diamond, it gets a push of momentum from a westward gust of wind. Despite the effort, the breeze was not enough as the ball rattled off the top of the fence and fell to the damp, warning track dirt. It laid there patiently waiting until the sweaty hand of a center fielder grasped the laces with three fingers and launched it back into action. Again, it was airborne, but this time heading towards the excitement.…

When a person decided to be in a sport, their main focus is being the best they can be. They just want to be the star on the team, and do what they have to do. Summer softball took the best girls in the town league and put them on two ‘equal’ teams to play against other teams in the area. In my opinion the teams were never equal and I was always on the better team. Like in basketball this team dominated the competition. We weren’t as successful as we were in basketball, but we still did win our fair share of games and championships. It’s pretty safe to say that before I got to high school I was very accustomed to being a part of the best teams as well as winning the majority of our…
