Reflective Essay: The Role Of A Social Worker

First of all, the role of a social worker is a difficult one. It requires a social worker to have an extended amount of knowledge on the multiplicity of interventions allotted to them, to remain professional and have an open mind, as no two cases are the same. The social worker must learn to deal with many different facets such as diversity, cultures, morals and ethical codes that people may or may not have acquired in their life. Therefore, it is imperative that the social worker is professional enough to separate their personal emotions from their clients. “Several parents had called him complaining that she was teaching about “homosexuality” and “gay marriage” in class.” By initiating a meeting with the principal, and asking that their children be moved to another class, they close their minds to social growth. Many times people let their professional functioning be influenced because of their personal opinions. As a social worker one must refrain from such an act. Ms. Ribiero also showed concern for the future of her students. “All I did was read a book about a little girl with two moms. Denise is in my class and her classmates had questions. In a year or two those questions are going to turn into bullying if we don’t do something now.” Our society is ever evolving and developing an awareness of cultural values such as respect for diverse groups is paramount.
