Reflective Essay: The Process Of My Writing

Decent Essays
I begin the process of writing by thinking about the topic. This may include brainstorming and collecting data to expand my knowledge of the subject. When I brainstorm I get a paper and pen to write down any ideas that come to mind. I then develop the jumbled mass of thoughts into a list of more complete ideas or points that I wish to address. After gathering my thoughts, I begin to think about the paper's format. I attempt to understand my audience and what I want them to grasp from my paper. Depending on the purpose of the writing, I mentally choose a format that helps me best arrange my thoughts. After organizing my thoughts and developing an understanding of the paper as a whole, I write a thesis statement, which acts basically as the topic

Most people write a free write to start off their paper; just to get their mind going but that doesn 't work for me. I have to visualize things to get my mind going, this method works more than people think it does. I like to draw a Chart, Outline, or even a diagram about my topic for me to write anything first. I just can 't start writing, its more of mental issue. I like to have things in order for me to start.…

I do this in order to gain a clear understanding of what the paper is asking of me. Next, I consult all the materials given, or collected by me, to begin to form an idea about what I want my paper to state. Then I start my outline. Outlining is a pretty simple process for me it usually includes headings that state the main idea of the paragraph with bullet points of supporting detail.…

The way I move through my own writing process is simple. I always start with research on a specific topic that an instructor gives me. I’m that kind of person that loves to highlight the important details of someone else’s information so I can admire her or his work in my papers. Then after finding the right amount of work to compose my own paper I start out with a title page.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

In the beginning, I looked at the different ways of preparing for a paper and one stuck out to me. I would write an outline of what I wanted to write about and then I would make sub-headings under each bulletin describing what each topic would talk about. I used this process more with my research papers than with the narrative essays because I could see what facts I needed to look up and which ones I already knew. For the non-research essays, I wrote the first sentence to every paragraph first. After that I would write an outline of what I wanted to talk about in each paragraph.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

After reading the topic, I like to brainstorm my ideas that I would like to write about. This step might even include researching the topic more using the internet or book sources, if it is a research paper or essay. I start the bibliography in this step, if outside sources are used. Secondly, I group my thoughts together, this would create my body paragraphs. This way I can have connecting ideas or thoughts together.…

During my first essay I started out with the impression that I had done some of my best work and that there was no way that I could receive a bad grade on this piece of work. After reviewing the feedback I received I found that my work was not up to APA standards. The narrative that I wrote was more of a creative writing piece and barely a scientific piece. I thought that this piece was going to be great because I was very descriptive and visualized most details of my experience. I thought it would be a good idea to stand out with this piece instead of writing a boring piece that was going to say the same things that my peers would write about.…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…

Typically, I tend to struggle with introductions, conclusions, and capturing detail when it comes to writing. I always write the body paragraphs first, typically followed by the conclusion, leaving the introduction for last. I find by the time I have written everything else, I am able to pull ideas from the essay and incorporate them into the introduction. I use spell check via Microsoft Word, an online thesaurus and dictionary, and sites like Grammerly.com for editing purposes.…

As an adult, a wife, a mother and a librarian, I practice written language every day. At no time had anyone raised attention to my writing style, I was positive I communicated properly. I was sure I practised correct grammar and punctuation consistently. My only concerns with writing had been my confidence with abstaining from being 'wordy' together with applying proper referencing. ' Wordiness' is part of my colloquial language, ‘long-winded’ as my family says.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

Composing Process I recently started back to school after many years of working. Although assigned writing is a little stressful for me, I am attempting to get used to it. I like to think I am a fun person to talk to, however I do not feel I am an entertaining writer by any means. Writing is a great challenge to me because writing restricts facial expressions, tone of voice and hand gestures in which I use very frequently while speaking. This poses a problem as I try to organize and arrange sentences to reflect how I would actually say them in person.…

The writing process is a process that fluctuates amongst students. Whether you create structured outlines or simply jot down your ideas, you do what works for you. My writing process consists of diluting the prompt to fit my understanding and to create a thorough, well organized outline. My process like others, oscillate depending on the assignment given to us.
