Reflective Essay: The Process Of Managing School And Raing

Since I share a bathroom with my RA, I get easy access to someone willing to answer my questions and foster my interest in becoming an RA. Before even beginning the process, I sat down with my RA and talked about what to expect, whether it seemed like I could do it and if it was worth it. She was able to answer most of my questions and doubts. When given this assignment, my initial reaction was, “Oh… Well I guess I’ll just have to do it all over again.” I was surprised to find out that throughout the course, I had come up with quite a few other questions and concerns to ask about. It was also interesting to see how two different RAs answered similarly and differently. For my informational interview, I met up with Jacqueline Wacker, a Residential Advisor for Sierra Madre, during her desk shift. It was not purposefully set up this way but it made it so that, during the interview, I got to watch her interact with residents coming and going. She talked about how she often studies in her room and just leaves the door open so that her residents know that they can come in for whatever they may need. You’re there 24/7 but it’s not always like a job, sometimes it’s honestly just like talking and hanging out with your friends. Similarly, my own RA has an open door policy. If she’s in her room, then the door is either open or unlocked and the residents all know that we are welcome to go in for anything. I understand that in the beginning it will be much more about feeling all the residents out and figuring out who is who and will therefore require more personal outreach on my part.
