Reflective Essay: The Old Paradigm

The Old Paradigm Poor listening is a sign of disrespect. My husband and I recently recognized that we do not always listen to each other as intently as we listen to others. We are committed to our marriage, and because of that, we don’t always respect each other as we should. Rath and Conchie (2008) said that a characteristic of the greatest leaders was having their spouse as their best friend. My husband and are good friends, and it’s great that we can own up to our mistakes. Making eye contact with my husband when he is talking is the best way for me to listen. Working in a church-sponsored Christian school, I can see the dangers of being stuck in old paradigms. I am so thankful that the majority of our staff wants to change our method while keeping our message the same. ACSI requires Continuous Improvement Plans for each school. Spiritually we cannot stay the same; we must grow closer to God or we will fall away from Him. I love it that all learning points me back to God, the Creator of learning. As a verbal person, I find it easy; however, if I know that someone really enjoys a handwritten note, I can sacrifice my time and write a note. I feel responsible to teach communication, and I am surprised that there is little emphasis on the teaching of listening when the majority of our time involves listening. I actually grade listening, especially when students are giving oral projects; listening shows respect. Catching people doing right brings joy to all and often inspires others to do their best work. Humility means considering the needs of others before my own. Hunter (2012) points out how dependent we actually are throughout our
