A city filled with so much history, so many intellects, and so many possibilities, is the destination for any student who strives to reach their full potential. The real world experiences that a student can grasp in D.C. is unparalleled to anywhere else in the world. It opens me up to the real world and forces me to keep an open mind. I want to escape the current bubble I am living in where everyone around me shares a similar set of predispositions. With this form of learning, I am exposed to a new set of ideas and a new way of thinking on a daily basis. To many people, this would seem frightening and intimidating. However, this is one of the most powerful reasons why I am so attracted to this

George Washington’s last wish as president of the United States was for the political system to not be tainted by political parties; however, the Federalists and democratic republicans quickly destroyed any hope of this. Both sides had contrasting political views and steadfastly held their position. The leader of the democratic Republican Party, Thomas Jefferson, was a major advocate of states’ rights and fought venomously against Federalist policies such as the national bank. Yet, when he became president of the United States, his views started to change. Before his presidency, Jefferson was an ardent supporter of states’ rights and restricted government; however, once he became president, he began to use the government’s power for his benefit.…

In 1796, one of the founding fathers and the first president George Washington was bringing to a close, his 2nd term in the presidency. The letter composed, which we now refer to as “Washington’s Farewell Address” would be not only widely circulated, but cherished for years to come. His address would not only cover his resignation, but because of its content seems somewhat of a prophecy, as it went on to describe some of the shortcomings we see today as the advice offered was not heeded. In this paper my intent is to not only provide a personal analysis, but to highlight the subject areas which are relevant even today and therefore prove significant.…

Times may be changing, but traditions hold true. Said best by the first father of our country, “Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant, and a fearful master.” President George Washington understood the discipline, consistency, and lucidity requisite to consolidate a growing nation. Undeniably, his sharp mind and innate governance sustained a widespread sense of triumph, pride, and purpose among citizens that we Americans have long since faced for ourselves.…

In 1796, George Washington wrote his farewell letter at the end of his second term as President to the people of the United States of America declining to remain in his position of President. This letter was not his first draft declining his position as President. Interestingly, Washington intended on presenting the original draft of this letter after the end of his first term, but was strongly advised to run again and wait another term before stepping down due to the recent formation of the Federalist and Republican parties. It was a cause of concern that without a strong leader, the country would be ripped apart without Washington remaining at the helm. There are many key points that can be taken into consideration from George Washington’s…

Every school across the United States places heavy expectations on their select group of honor students; therefore, I will research the ethnographic scene of honor students at Eaton High School. I would like to interview students who grew up taking the most challenging classes possible, such as well known names in our school like Elizabeth Leonard and Adam Richling. I would also like both interviewees to be from different ‘cliques’ in the school. There are various student athletes, music program members, and other students who participate in different activities, but they all hold the same work ethic and achieve top marks. As for artifacts, grades and test grades can be used as well as materials used in class that allow the honor students…

Long, wide roads, small houses, and steel fences were my view as I walked into an unfamiliar building called Thomas Jefferson Middle School. I did not know anything about the culture or the language; a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. I felt goose bumps as I first walked in the building. The building was old and was not well cared for. The colors of the walls were fading and the elevators made the sound of a dying animal when it moved.…

Ever since I can recall, I have had a fervent passion for government and politics. Unlike kids my age, I would always pick up a newspaper to keep up on current events, instead of watching SpongeBob or playing video games. I grew up with a craving to help people and solve America’s congressional dysfunction. Many of my friends and teacher started to call me “Mr. President,” and thus after being chosen as most likely to become President in middle and high school, my motivation to study government and make a lasting impact on the political history of America grew stronger.…

Once all of the categorical awards conclude, the announcer continues on to the four awards for distinction and the Post President’s Award, in other terms, the fifth through second places and the first place winner. This April, I am facilitating an Earth Day service learning, which will teach students about environmental issues, as well as, introduce them to community engagement and volunteerism through a neighborhood clean up event. Given these points, my main goal in life is to combine everything that I learned from researching and traveling as a tool to improve underserved communities and developing cities, in the United States. Knowing that the dynamics of cities are changing, I want to be responsible for developing ideas and initiatives that would allow us to adapt to impacts caused by population influx and climate change. It would be an honor to learn in a program that encourages the self reflection of individual actions, assesses the impacts of our actions based on a national and global scale, and exposes students to a diverse set of perceptions and tools that will allow them to be an aid of change. If I was given the opportunity to earn a masters degree in Urban Development from the GSPIA program, I am confident that I will be able to bring to the table an open mind, unconventional approaches and ideas, and the willingness be cultivated into a future…
