The question I want to answer is how a job or extracurricular activity has shaped my perspective. Young people are first socialized by family and school and these activities can affect one’s mindset in unique and powerful ways. In my case, I recently became a pharmacy technician. Through this experience I became exposed to the staggering effects and struggles of poverty.
One of the biggest culture shocks I received while on the job came in the form of a meeting with a young woman who was unable to fill out a vaccine questionnaire. In her own words, she “didn’t read so good.” Sometimes a working customer called to ask for an advance on medication that would tide him or her over until payday, when he or she could afford the full prescription.
