Reflective Essay: Safe Routes To School

Improved Essays
Everyone in my family from my parents to my cousins tell me to never give up when doing something in life, however it became clear when I came face to face with the legislative process of California in April 2014. I joined the nonprofit Safe Routes to School that same year and it was our mission to help pass SB-1151, an act proposed to increase fines in school and traffic zones, but these events started before the actual presentation before the state. The only things I remembered was just fear from just being invited with my colleagues to go to the Capitol, for preparation and the meeting, but I realized my commitment to the environment, safety, and the organization became the reason why I preserved for coming storm.

I believe if you develop good habits now by working hard even when the odds are not in your favor then it will stick with you and become natural in the future. Although I follow this I still have times where it is hard for me not to give in especially when I’m going through a tough time with school or sports. I have had a lot of coaches in my life remind me to never stop trying. During difficult, trying times some people feel helpless and give up way too easily. Others somehow find enough strength to find solutions to their problems. Whether giving up is done consciously or unconsciously, one thing for sure is that the outcomes are two immensely distinct scenarios. A door of hope is permanently shut when the will to try is lost. On the other hand, when we hold on a bit longer and have that small push—a voice that says, “keep going,” the possibilities are endless.…

Stop Saying That the Public Schools in North Carolina Are Awful There are always teenagers complaining about the certain things they do not like about their schools; for example, if their next class is far away from the one they are now, if the school’s bus is late almost every day, or for what reason do they have to go to school if they do not want? I understand not everybody in North Carolina likes the way in how the public schools in this state work, but if we focus more on their good side like their installations, services, and educational system, we will find how wonderful these schools are. First, the installations of the public schools in North Carolina are not as bad as many of all us think. As a foreign student, I have had the opportunity to see the differences between the public schools in Mexico City and those in North Carolina, and I have found that the ones in this state are awesome.…

What is the school-to-prison-pipeline? “It is a devastating process through which many of our children particularly males and students of color receive an inadequate education and are then pushed out of public schools and into the criminal punishment system” (Scully, 2015). The pipeline is having a direct connection to school discipline. In addition, because the educational system adopted a zero tolerance policy it has setup students to enter the prison pipeline.…

She was then also suspended from school for her miss behavior (Mandell). Not only were the actions performed unnecessary, but incredibly harsh for a girl her age. The action of pushing students from school straight into prison is called the school to prison pipeline. Overreliance of harsh disciplinary actions is causing the school to prison pipeline cycle to happen and continue to happen.…

Throughout my research on the school to prison pipeline, I was able to identify where the main issues began and how it effects children as they grow up. There are certain policies and procedures that can be done to eliminate these issues that continue in the school systems. By setting up different recourses, this can eliminate the disparities among the students, and eliminate the harsh punishments that are set for these young adolescents. Within many schools, the use of harsh disciplinaries are set in place to control the minor infractions that the young adolescents create, but are these disciplinaries too harsh?…

The school-to-pipeline term according to Lia Epperson is, “One of the most disturbing factors presently limiting educational advancement is the significant racial disparity in the apportionment of school discipline. Due to a series of state-enacted policies throughout the last two decades, school districts across the nation have adopted so-called “zero tolerance policies” that apportion the harshest of criminal punishments for minor, nonviolent offenses. Through such state policies, students of color— and particularly African American children—are overwhelmingly more likely to suffer suspension, expulsion, and arrest, often for nonviolent infractions. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the “school-to-prison pipeline.” Today’s school-to-prison…
