Reflective Essay: Purchasing My First Car

Almost every wide eyed child wishes they were older to enjoy the imagined thrill of driving a car or even having candy for dinner. However, reality strikes hard when on the cusp of adulthood. The very first glimpses of maturity are revealed during the last years of high school and finally present themselves with a coming of age item a car. To parents a car comes as a precursor to watching their little ones leaving the nest. My experiences with my first car gave me personal insight on the consequences of freedom, responsibility, and caution.

I could have pulled out of my driveway just fine but then gotten into a much more serious accident that might have ended my life or even someone else’s; or I could have gone to bed earlier thus making all that had happened a nightmare. Life’s “could haves” are what make everyday important if you calculate your actions in a sober and focused mindset. My silly mistake ended up with $300 worth of damages out of my pocket. Learning from mistakes is the most rewarding and invaluable lesson we can take away from a heart-stopping moment so that maybe one day we can reflect on what we can work on to make ourselves better. My new outlook on being cautious when behind the wheel has drastically unveiled the fragility of life. It is recommended to not drive while having strong emotions or when sleep deprived since it reduces judgment and focus. In fact, “According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, each year drowsy driving crashes result in at least 1,500 deaths and 71,000 injuries. Similar to drunk and drugged driving, sleep loss or fatigue slows reaction time, makes drivers less attentive and impairs decision-making skills” (Florida Highway Safety and Motor
