My mother went to a four year college in Russia for nursing and then went to medical school and my father went to Boston University and then to Suffolk Law School. My whole family has gone to college so I felt like I needed to go as well, but also I wanted to go as my own decision. I wanted to go to college to get a better job than I had been getting for summer work. With a college degree in my major, I would finally have a chance to get a job that I love.
When I started this semester, I was very shaky. My mind was racing and I kept thinking the majority of the kids that went college from Martha's Vineyard end up dropping out or taking a year off because they could not handle going from isolation to the real world. I was wondering if I would be one of them. My parents have told I was not very good at English, and that my high school really did not teach me what I needed to know for college. Ever since high school, I have always been a slow reader and not a very good writer. Throughout high school, I have had to write summaries and stories on books. I started out not knowing many concepts I need like what an article response was. I wrote all my papers as if they were a narrative because I was used to it. I look back now and I have blossomed to different styles with all my writing this semester. In my first piece of writing, there were a lot of corrections to be made. I overcame what I was used to and as I learned new strategies, I applied those such as creative writing to my college writing.
