Worship And Religion

When I think of worship I think of lifting your hands high to the Heavens and singing with gusto out of reverence and love for the Lord and all that he has done. Whether I am in my car or at home, I make sure that I worship regularly. There are also other ways to worship as well besides singing (Psalm 100:1-2) and praise and thanksgiving (Ephesians 5:20). They include: dancing such as when King David was offering sacrifices to God when the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem. 1 Samuel 6:12-14. Observing annual feast days such as the feast of Passover (Matthew 26:17) using our spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1) and being a living sacrifice. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies …show more content…
Then immediately afterward the amount that people had given were announced aloud as if it were an auction house instead of a place of worship. When it came time to shake each other’s hands, people mainly kept to themselves and just sat there. Could I have extended my hand? Absolutely, but the look I was getting from people made me feel like I would be rejected and/or ignored. The final straw for me was when I filled out a card with my information and the pastor called me and said that he could fill me with the Holy Spirit. I was taken aback. A person can’t fill me with the Holy Spirit, only God can. Then he went on to say that the church lays hands on new members and once they speak in tongues then they will be invited to be active members. “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in …show more content…
I am not saying I was isolated because of my race but maybe because I was not of them- someone who was not non-denominational. One of my gifts isn’t speaking in tongues and I didn’t donate large amounts of money to the church so I was an outsider from their perspective. The practices were completely different than what I was used to and the people were more rigid, unfriendly (except for a chosen few) and like robots. Overall, to sum it up I would have to say that it was an experience that I will not want to have again. I did end up going back to my regular church where the congregation is mostly Hispanic and Caucasian and the difference in not only the people but the atmosphere is like night and day to one I went to for this paper. I refuse to forsake assembling due to a bad experience. I know just to stick to the church where I feel comfortable and the word of God is homiletic. That other church definitely needs to read Galatians “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28,

Organized religion is defined as an “institutionalized religion, usually with a hierarchical clergy and rules to govern the means by which adheres participate” (Merriam-Webster). History has shown that organized religion is, in most cases, forcefully placed in society. As a result, many people develop an intense disdain and contempt for organized religion. One can see the use of a forced organized religion in the work of Leonardo Sciascia. The overall theme of disdain and contempt for organized religion is portrayed through both the Rector of Sant’Anna’s and old Professor Roscio’s thoughts regarding Catholicism and the Catholic Church itself in the novel, To Each His Own by Leonardo Sciascia.…

There were large numbers of people from different faiths in San Antonio: Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Catholics, Atheists, Agnostics, and Mormons to name a few. Nearly every person I encountered believed something different about the world. The transition to a place with such a diversity of beliefs was quite a life-changing ordeal. It has given me a better understanding of the world, and a realization that most people do not have the same beliefs that I do. I have made great friends from all kinds of religious and ethnic backgrounds.…

Last Sunday, I attend my friend’s Francine church service generally speaking going to church is something that has been installed in me, throughout my upbringing being that, I am a Baptist Christian, but I decided to take a cultural plunge and experience another domination of Christianity. Francine’s Church is called The Evening of the Light and is considered a Protestant church. Prior to attending the service, I was shocked when Francine instructed me to wear a long skirt or dress that went pass my knees and not to wear any make- up. This was so odd to me because at my church there were no dress codes and the members typically wore formal attire on the first Sunday of the month because we took communion and there definitely wasn’t any restriction…

While religion and film are concepts that most believe to be separate I would instead argue that cinematography itself is a form of religion, fulfilling the role of worldmaking and establishing a code of conduct. Brent Plate’s book Religion and Film demonstrates the similarity between film and religion when explaining that “Religion and film are akin. They both function by recreating the known world and then presenting that alternative version of the world to their viewers/worshippers” (2). Placing a focus on the 2010 film, The Book of Eli as an example we see stylistic choices in the direction lead viewers to experience an assembly post-nuclear apocalyptic world, as a revolutionary historical point is referred to as “The Flash” and the Earth…

Spiritual Gifts and Unity in Christ from 1st Corinthians 12: 1-31 Paul’s words in his letter to the Corinthian church, lays an emphasis on the virtue and need for unity within these community of believers as it relates to the diverse operations of spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12:1-31). This is because spiritual gifts and unity are interconnected and vital to their church experience and Christian life. According to him, our effectiveness as the church of Jesus Christ lies in our willingness to work together even as we recognise the different abilities bestowed on us by the Holy Spirit. In this section of the letter the apostle advocates for a more communal spirituality than an individualistic approach to living out one’s faith experience. He reiterates the fact that the Corinthians church was one body possessing different members (1 Corinthians 12: 20-27).…
