Carinya is located just around the corner from my house which made me realise that we are living among those who need our support. They are right outside our doorstep, so we must treat them as our neighbour. The second of Jesus two great commandments “Love your neighbour as yourself” reinforces this need to love those who surround you and treat them as individuals like yourself. I have also realised that it is much easier to help out those in need than I first imagined. When thinking about volunteering, I always thought it was a long and difficult process however, I now know that it is actually really quite simple and that most organisation are actually wanting more volunteers and are willing to arrange certain times??. When reflecting on my faith, I have learnt the importance of helping others. There are so many teachings that promote helping others, and by completing this volunteering, I have learnt that it is incredibly important to follow these teachings. Mark 10:45 states “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” which through this service learning programme, we all called to follow Jesus by serving others. As well as this I also understood that a little difference can have a large effect on someone else. Just visiting the residents and talking to them, made me realise that, what is only a little part of my life, can actually have a significant effect on another person’s life. While at Carinya, the residents told me that they enjoyed talking and spending time with me, which made me feel happy that I have improved their day. Man has been created in “God’s image and likeness” (genesis 1:27), describes how man has been created to act and love as God did and therefore, by completing this service activity, I now understand the importance of following what has been taught, by helping others in my community as Jesus
