Reflective Essay On Stony Brook University

Hi, how are you feeling today? I hope you're doing well and has managed to survive the semester. I also hope that it wasn't too rough because right now the physics homework seems so difficult. I really do hope it has gotten better and that now you understand the complex problems for simple concepts. So how exactly do I feel about Stony Brook University and my time here. Am I completely happy with where I am and do I hope to stay here for the next four years? I'm not sure how to answer this question because I don't know if I like this place or that I'm glad this place isn't too much of a financial burden. Ironically it feels like a burden because it's the start of the semester and there are so many expenses that I have to make such as textbooks and access codes. I honestly can't wait until I finally start saying money and actually have something other than a few cents in my …show more content…
There’s only two grades for freshman seminar: pass or fail. I am confident that I will get a pass because I believe the only reason you would get a fail is if you screw up or don’t do any of the assignments. I think I will encounter many challenges my first year and a few them include time management and stress. I was never good at managing time even in high school because I left things to the last minute and always slept too late to be considered healthy. Now that I am in college with many gaps in my schedule that consist of hour long breaks, I still manage to do my homework at the last minute. I don’t know how to use every hour of my day wisely, but I hope I am able to learn by the end of the semester. I value in doing well in school, but also having a social life. I think many people in university have similar feelings because you have to keep yourself grounded and too much of either will completely destroy

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

All it took was three days. Three days for my view on life, the way I live, and how I view others to change. Towards the middle of my sophomore year I received an email from my guidance counselor asking me if I wanted to attend the HOBY seminar during the summer. Only one student from the high school was chosen to go, and I was honored to have been that one. HOBY stands for the Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Seminar.…

It was always my goal. Ever since I went to a debate camp there over the summer, I knew I wanted to go to Stanford. The worst part of it all was that I actually, genuinely, wholeheartedly believed that I could. I believed that I was different. Although statistics might have suggested otherwise, I thought that the acceptance rates of nearly four percent didn’t apply to me, the academic prodigy from downtown Detroit.…

There are several factors for me wanting to transfer to Simpson College. I went to high school in Indianola and I like the small town feel along with the big city competitiveness. Indianola is a place that I have had great leaders and experiences that my children, in the future, would be able to learn and experience life, like I did. In high school, I had the privilege to be taught and mentored by Kevin Barnes, who also went to Simpson College. He talked highly about Simpson College and everything he had accomplished there; so, I've always been intrigued by the idea of receiving an education and competing there as well.…

But if a student decides to stay home and study for an exam instead of going to the party, then it can have a negative effect on their social life. During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

My first semester of college has been an intersting learning experience. It has been full of ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot since being in college, mostly how to take charge of my life and get my priorities straight. I learned that being successful in college depends on how you prioritize your work and how serious you take it. At first my priorities weren 't where they were supposed to be, and I realized my grades were going to suffer if I did not change.…

Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming)…
