My parents decided to wait enrolling me in kindergarten. This allowed me the opportunity to work close with a speech therapist and dentist to prepare me to enter school. My insecurities from my speech led me to be extremely shy; fortunately, my teachers provided me with opportunities to shine within the classroom. She asked questions that needed to be answered before moving forward. Was dentistry what I was looking for? How do we afford going back to school with two kids? What about my teaching job? After months of deliberation and reflection, we decided this was something I needed to pursue and we would work every day towards my goal of becoming a dentist.
Since then, I negotiated my schedule to complete my prerequisites by taking night courses while teaching full-time to support my family. I learned to study late nights, early morning, and on weekends while still leaving some time for my children, Asher and Aria.
To get more experience, I observed local dentists. I witnessed clinical procedures that required fine motor skills. The transformation of the patients were inspiring. To witness people walk out with more ease, comfort, and confidence gave me the motivation to work even harder.
