At the age of five, my mom surprised me that I needed to go to speech therapy. A lady introduced herself, took me into a room and asked me numerous, random questions. Following the encounter, the speech therapist found that the roof of my mouth was too small and my tongue was too big. In additional to speech therapy, I was to have orthodontic treatment to expand my palate.
My parents decided to wait enrolling me in kindergarten. This allowed me the opportunity to work close with a speech therapist and dentist to prepare me to enter school. My insecurities from my speech led me to be extremely shy; fortunately, my teachers provided me with opportunities to shine within the classroom. They allowed me time to rehearse what I wanted to say or read during classroom discussions. They gave me courage to step outside my comfort zone and grow as an individual. She asked questions that needed to be answered before moving forward. Was dentistry what I was looking for? How do we afford going back to school with two kids? What about my teaching job? After months of deliberation and reflection, we decided this was something I needed to pursue and we would work every day towards my goal of becoming a dentist.
Since then, I negotiated my schedule to complete my prerequisites by taking night courses while teaching full-time to support my family. I learned to study late nights, early morning, and on weekends while still leaving some time for my children, Asher and Aria.
To get more experience, I observed local dentists. I witnessed clinical procedures that required fine motor skills. The transformation of the patients were inspiring. To witness people walk out with more ease, comfort, and confidence gave me the motivation to work even harder. With every patient I witnessed, I realized the impact that dentistry had on their lives – the same impact it had on me as a
