Iowa Big Reflection

After reflecting back on your presentation there were a few things that stuck in my mind. The first one was when you asked our class to say why we were here, there was another question (not on the recording), and wrote them on the chalk board. The reason I think it stuck in my mind was because of how you were able to relate your presentation back to those words and why they were important. Despite our answers they were able to relate to your story in one way or another. One of the words was related back to the idea of being conditioned for fear. This was a concept that I have never heard of and thought it was interesting once I learned what it was and how it can affect you. It makes it so as if certain things weren’t even happening in your …show more content…
During this part you talked about how several things needed to be reimagined. Those were education, health care, government, and transportation. One way to re do education would be like what Iowa Big is about. This is the new type of schooling/ education that is being tested out to see if students will benefit from it or not. I think that this is a great idea and I would agree with you that something needs to be done to change our school systems. Our school systems have lost what the main goal of an education is and I think that Iowa Big is changing that and allowing us to get back on the right track based on what you told us about the school and how the classes are based. I like the idea of getting real world experience and working with the community as a way to gain education, instead of being locked up in a building for 8 hours and not learning. This could be part of the reason why children are having such hard time learning and remembering information. They aren’t getting to interact as much as students used to be able to and are getting even less time to be children while they are younger. We are drilling more and more into their heads during k-12 and causing them to learn more when under and can lead to them becoming burnt …show more content…
I just thought he had a very inspirational story to tell us students. It was a very good speech for me to listen to and had some things I could take away from it. Don’t be afraid to achieve your goals you have set. You might be faced with hard times throughout your life, but you have to keep going and not let them bring you down. Also you need to make sure you do what makes you happy and not what other people are telling you to do. It’s your life, not theirs! I think continuing to work on Iowa Big and changing our education is a really important aspect of our future. I am very glad I was able to take this class and be able to learn all the things I have

Ulises Gonzalez 2nd Self-Critique In general, I felt the presentation went well, but after reviewing the video, there are a number of areas I need to improve. First of all, I started well because I presented myself to the audience, I did not have my hands in my pockets, and I was not playing around with my hands, so the first part went really well in general. The presentation was well explained, but it could have been more developed and interesting. The organization was well structured since it addressed everything it was supposed to, but it could have been better because the presentation used the ideas of the paper, and I did not implement new ones.…

For this assignment, my group’s topic was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how it is prevalent in the novel, ‘Speak’ by Laurie Hall Anderson. My responsibility was to do the facts and statistics slide and to do the two characters that experienced/influenced PTSD slide. While working on the assignment, I did run into some challenges. The biggest being that it was hard to find facts and statistics on PTSD that were Canadian and relatively recent. I ran into this issue because many websites that I found focused more on America, on worldwide facts and statistics, and the information was quite outdated.…

If the public education system is going to work for all children, changes need to take place with less focus on standardized testing and inclusion, and provide more focus on building a solid foundation, establishing programs which address the learning style and academic level of placement necessary for the student to comprehend and acquire an appropriate education in reading, writing and arithmetic. This would be a great step forward in correcting the American education system. One size fits all mentality needs to…

During my one visit to Appalachian State, I was able to to witness the overall beauty of the campus, as well as the ubiquitous sense of community. Moreover, the immense focus towards conservation stood out to me, as I have always been extremely passionate about preserving the environment. Additionally, I have only heard immensely positive feedback about the university, especially in regards to the forensic science program, which I intend to earn a degree from. Overall, the most valuable aspects of college to me are that they provide a strong sense of community, and actively strive towards conservation and professionalism, so I believe Appalachian State is the best school for me in these…

After attending the Diversity Summit workshop, I felt inspired. Our speaker, Dr. Karl Reid, was a brilliant and educated man who had a passion for fixing the opportunity inequality in schools and the workforce for all minorities. Well being the executive director of NSBE, The National Society of Black Engineers, he goes to many Universities and advocates for minorities and low income students. I was lucky enough to hear him speak on “A Grand Challenge: Understanding Why Diversity Works.” During his talk, I learned many things; from what NSBE is and why he’s involved, to matching the units, and even self-efficacy.…

It also makes me wonder why there has not been any positive change in the education system of the U.S. It appears to be common knowledge on the ways the education powerhouses became so successful, but there seems to be little effort on the behalf of the U.S to emulate these countries. It seems like the U.S does not want to take all the steps other countries have taken to revamp their education system. Based on information from this book, leaders in education need to view the purpose and function of education differently, and then try to implement education reform strategies. Until there is a mindset change, I truly believe the education system in the U.S could never be as successful as other countries.…

In my opinion, the presentation went well. We were able to present to the class both views of Antigone in a way that got them involved and thinking. The information the class needed to receive about the different views of Antigone was represented in a different way that helped the class get the information, but have them engaged and participating in it also. We were able to argue our points in the time given and have enough time to hold a class discussion with the jury about Antigone and her perspective on her brother’s burial. In the presentation, I was able to talk about the different points on Antigone’s behalf and make the connection between all three and why that represented her innocence.…
