Taking Care Of The Crew Essay

Improved Essays
There are countless similar definitions of leadership; my personal take on the subject is “Achieving a common goal while taking care of the crew.” There have been numerous influences on my leadership style throughout my career; most positive and a few that couldn’t lead their way out of a cardboard box. The first two members who were the most impactful and had the most influence were: QMC Glenn Lamonte (retired BMCM) and CDR Patrick Culver. Both of these men were exceptional operators who also took great care of their crew; they had the ability to listen, earned the respect of their superiors and subordinates, delegated responsibility and encouraged growth while taking charge of whatever emergent situation arose. Another poor leader whom I …show more content…
Those two areas receive 90% of my focus and everything else is secondary. The values that were most important to me were Competence, Honesty, Family, Love and Happiness. These characteristics tie directly back into my philosophy. We need competent and confident Coasties to get the mission done. We also need Coasties to be in the right frame of mind while conducting these dangerous missions and that’s where the family, love and happiness come into play. If things aren’t good on the home front there are typically problems at the office. My crew knows that I and the Coast Guard demand a lot from them but they also know that whenever a personal issue arises that I will do everything in my power to accommodate them and give them the necessary time that they need to take care of their unique situations. I have the flexibility as an OIC to make these decisions without seeking a higher level of permission and a lot of the written feedback that I received in the LPI was gratitude for taking care of the crew. The mission is important, I couldn’t be an OIC without that being a top priority, but at the end of the day we are all going to separate from the Coast Guard at some point and I constantly remind my crew to take care of their families at home. Once the Coast Guard is out of our life the mission won’t matter and all we will have left is our

Leadership is defined as being a leader of an organization or a group of individuals. To me a leader is someone who will give their all to accommodate someone in obligation of assistance. A leader doesn’t give up on hard task and pushes to be an example for their peers. I have demonstrated my leadership in and out of school by being a responsible, honest and hardworking individual, who expresses empathy to help those who didn’t think they could achieve a goal on their own. While in high school I have been in multiple extracurricular activities such as Drill Team, FBLA, FCCLA, Student Council, Class Treasurer, NHS and Yearbook.…

Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. True leadership is simply more than being bossy and I have learned this through my experiences within boy scouts.…

How is leadership defined? Is it the ability to achieve followers, or the ability to make the right decisions? Some lead out of fear, others out of logic and reasoning. Although very different, both can be effective types of leaders. Peter Drucker, a famous leader, once said, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”…

Almost four years ago, I entered Clackamas High School as a confused, shy, awkward freshman. Soon after entering the hallways of this school, I was assigned to a Freshman Assurance group and met with the group leaders. My group leaders were vivacious seniors, who were condescending and gave very little advice on high school. I felt a little intimidated by them, and the activities that they led made most of the freshmen in our group uncomfortable. They told us about their craziest stories and about the teachers who weren't of the most pleasant experience.…

Milk: The Definition of a Dignitary Used lightly in today’s society, the word “leader” is commonly used to refer to a person who comes out and directs a group to take action in some way, shape, or form. By this definition, a good leader would be one whose directions land the group he or she is directing above all other groups. But in certain instances, like the ones of Odysseus and Harvey Milk, a leader isn’t always someone who is trying to be greater than those around them, they’re simply just people who make it their life mission to make the quality of the lives of those around them better. Leadership doesn’t necessarily have to be grandiose or significantly impactful. It can be displayed more casually or in a school environment like in my US History class. My table was often rowdy, which can be a problem when there was group work to complete. As a result, I constantly found myself assigning tasks to different people and managing their progress. One of the tasks of a leader is to make sure everyone does their part to achieve the end goal.…

Deck plate leadership, leading by example and getting to know your people. How often do we hear this? Quite a bit, as a matter of fact you hear about it but don’t necessarily see a lot of it. It is easy to sit back and do your daily work, for whatever reason it is, whether it is because we have a lot to do that day, over tasked and undermanned or plain old busy. To me leadership is getting out there and talking to the crew.…

Whenever a Marine or Sailor is ordered to join a particular unit, this is cause for joy and satisfaction for many, this for various reasons; In general it is thought that there will be an additional person who will be able to collaborate in everything that needs to be done, this so that the unit thrives. At the same time, the opportunity is born to meet a new person, a new story, and also opens the possibility of creating what could become a long-term friendship. In this way, the arrival of a new member would bring happiness, but would only be so, if we leaders take care of him or her properly during their incorporation. With this in mind, I want to mention that within the leadership positions we occupy, we are at the precise moment within…

The leading of a team or group is not a simple task but involves real life skills that take time, thinking and commitment. The role of leadership is an essential aspect of an organization since it can determine the difference between success and failure. “Although leaders are gifted in different ways, with different personalities and varying skill sets, all leaders can grow, become more skillful, and become more competent so that they can achieve greater effectiveness” (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014, pp. 10). At times, leadership may seem overwhelming and complicated, but by concentrating on specific fundamentals they will find that they can guide the team with the assurance and competence. Leadership is defined as influencing others by providing purpose, motivation, and direction (ADP 6-22). A leader will not always be the smartest person, there will always be someone more proficient in tactics or marksmanship than they are. A leader will not always be the strongest person, someone will always have a higher APFT score. These things don’t make them bad leaders, these things make them human.
