Reflective Essay On My Clinical Experience

Being a hands-on learner, I excelled the most in lab. I was always delighted to go in and learn how to do all the different procedures and acquire new skills that we would perform in the clinical setting. I enjoyed learning new techniques and figuring out the rationale as to why one may be better than the other. I also took pleasure in teaching and helping fellow students who were practicing their skills in the lab. Throughout my clinical experiences I was outgoing, friendly, curious, and always willing to help when I could. I was constantly seeking out new learning opportunities, asking to watch or help with different procedures, and inquired about things that I had not had the opportunity to learn yet. I had made more of an effort to study …show more content…
I started the bachelors program the same week that I moved out of my first apartment and into a new place with my long-time boyfriend, which was located in the city of Cleveland Ohio. He had to move to the city for work and with my continual search for a nursing job, we thought it would be a great idea for me to be living in an area where there are so many opportunities right at our doorstep. I didn’t know of anyone who had enrolled in the RN to BSN program prior to me, so I didn’t have even the slightest idea what I was getting myself into. I am however not very sure that any tips or advice would have been able to prepare me very much for everything I have encountered throughout my time with UA. I have overcome more challenges and obstacles then I could have ever imagined possible within such a short period of time. The program has allowed me to dive deeper into areas of nursing that I had never studied or was barely introduced to before. From getting involved with the community, reaching out to different individuals about complementary and alternative therapies, the importance of taking care of yourself as not only a nurse but a person, along with identifying and speaking up about the issues nurses regularly encounter, I have learned about and experienced so many opportunities that I would have never sought out on my own. I can already see how I have grown and changed my outlook on various topics in my personal and professional life due to the knowledge and information I have gained throughout this last

My journey first began when I decided to attend The University of Iowa in the fall of 2013 after graduating from Urbandale High School. I attended Iowa for 2 years and then when it came time to choose where I would apply to nursing school at I was stuck between wanting to continue on at Iowa’s College of Nursing, pending on my acceptance, but also needing a change in my life. I decided to choose change and Mercy College of Health Sciences presented an opportunity for just that. There is a program offered at Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCOHS) that was too good for me to pass up. My current focus has been on achieving my BSN and the program I had heard about was fairly new but provided an opportunity for me to get my BSN while doing it in only 2 short years.…

Deciding to go back to school to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a challenge for many nurses. I recognize the top two potential challenges for me are the time commitment and added expense. Similar to completing nursing school, deciding to complete the BSN program is going to be a team effort and all hands are going to need to be on deck. One of the components of a value-enhancing HIT platform is that it is patient-centered. This means that the system trails the patients across services, sites, and time for the full episode of care, and this includes hospitalization, outpatient clinic visits, laboratory testing, physical therapy, and other types of interventions (Porter & Lee, 2013). And I’m inclined to agree with you that collaboration between laboratory and primary care services should be integrated and immediately available to patients. To integrate care for individual patients across locations, healthcare providers must learn to tie together the patient’s care across the different sites.…

I feel extremely fortunate and lucky that I have had relatively little personal experience in the healthcare field. Most of my family, outside of grandparents that were in their 80s, has also been relatively healthy. I have not had cancer, broken a bone, gotten into an accident, or some other problem to bring me into a hospital, which would make it easy to say that I do not have a “illness narrative,” but the more I thought about this topic the more I realized how integral healthcare has been to me. While I have not had serious illnesses or treatments, I have had regular check-ups, gone to the doctor when I had a small problem, and been to specialists for my eyes and skin. Preventative medicine has been integral to my upbringing and culture, which could very well be the reason I have not had any serious illness in the past.…

Within the first two weeks of clinical, I believe there were a few aspects of my practice that were successful. One of these aspects involved my ability to properly irrigate a nasogastric tube. I see this as a strength because when asked to complete this task by my co-caring nurse, I informed her that I have never done this before, in which she responded by guiding me through the process and answering any questions I had. From this, I was able to correctly irrigate the patient’s tube as well as learn a new skill. Another aspect I believe to have showcased my success as a student nurse occurred when my co-caring nurse showed me how to reset a Sigma Spectrum IV Pump.…

All of the courses I studied were the foundation for the experiences I was able to organize. My first taste of psychology in my professional experiences was working at a summer day camp as a special needs one-on-one counselor. This summer position was my first exposure of what it necessitates to interact with people who need special attention in a work setting. Over the course of the summer I learned how to tailor activities, speak, and interact with children who are considered different, but are essentially exactly the same as the other campers. These children showed me what joy is and helped me establish a deeper understanding of patience.…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. During my time there, nurses often approached me to provide small learning experiences and teach students how to be efficient. When a nurse on the unit asked for help with a bed bath for a patient with whom I was not familiar, I agreed. I wanted to get as much experience as I could. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…

My personal experience and take away from English 111 was what I expected it would be before I started the course. No, there was no “life changing” moment for me from this course and I honestly I can’t say I am a better or worse citizen for taking this class, but I can say my writing skills have improved, and that I feel more confident in my writing than prior to taking this course. Writing has and continues to be a challenge for me, I have no illusion that I will ever be a “perfect” or even a “good” writer for that matter, but because some of things I learned in how to prepare and to write an essay I feel I’m a much improved writer. Specifically the topics covered from the first module of this course help my development.…
