The cinemagraph medium showed me how you can take an original image and alter its meaning by putting emphasis on a specific moving element. I decided to go with the theme of “life” in my cinemagraphs. In particular, the movement and flow of life which is the main focus between these cinemagraphs. After choosing my theme I began to research videos that would reflect the idea of movement of life. I found that a good representation of this would be with the usage of water and environmental objects that surround people. When looking at the videos I thought of how I can take their original creation but select a specific movement within the frame that would tell a different and deeper message. The first image entitled “Wedding” represents the moment when two people are becoming one. They are framed within the “O” of the Toronto sign to represent the “ring”. The water itself, symbolizes their movement in life. The second image, “Artist” shows the flow of water that surrounds him, symbolizing that he himself is creating a stage within his environment. He is zoned out into his own moment, while the environment flows around him. The third image, “Tourist” symbolizes how newcomers in Toronto are looking for a fresh start in life. I wanted to showcase how subtle motion would represent the new terrain they are facing as they are unware of the new movements of life. The last image “Square” represents the constant flow of information. Dundas’ Square is known for its prime time location for advertising in Toronto. As it is always cluttered with people who are constantly moving, the advertisements also follow suit with their constant repetition. The main focus is based around the advertisements to showcase how too much movement can cause things to be overlooked as a whole. In a nutshell, I took the theme of movement and flow of life to showcase the deeper meaning that each image has within their frame, which is hidden within the jumbled
