Reflective Essay On Metacognition

As quickly as this quarter has gone by, there has been plenty of things I've learned. My favorite, being metacognition. Although, metacognition may have had absolutely nothing with this course, it seemed to be a very important tool for processing essays. Not only that, the process of defining the word “metacognition”, always managed to stir-up a good educated confabulation. Most importantly, this course has given a lot of confidence in my writing process. I learned how helpful, for me, it can be to begin your writing with a thesis. Specifically, starting with a thesis gives me room to bend, yet stay on track with my essays. Staying focused on the essays topic has been a bit of a weakness for me. Although, by using a thesis, as a start up tool it has come to be extremely helpful. …show more content…
All I had to do was figure out which topic interested me most; and bam! Some essay topics were easier to pick from than others. For instance, the exploration essay was easy for me to decide to write about exploring the graffiti world of Spokane, because I really enjoyed graffiti prior to writing the essay. While writing the argument essay I found that my actually argument was constantly changing. Due to the discussions in class, and reading others essays; I was constantly fidgeting with my message I was trying to get across in the essay. Although difficult, the argument essay really made me appreciate having peer reviews, and discussions with my classmates. The fact that even my peers couldn't figure out my actually argument was a good wake up call. With that, the argument essay really brought out my weaknesses and showed me what I really have to work on which is staying on topic, and connecting my ideas

Metacognition described by Chick is the “awareness or analysis of one’s own learning or thinking processes.” This is important in learning more about local issues of a political nature because when events are happening near you it is more likely to affect you and your life than if it was somewhere else in the nation. It is important to know the problems happening around you, so you can help find a cause or come up with a solution to solve this issue. With the actions happening around you it will most likely make you sad or have mixed emotions. You will be more inclined to help solve the problem and make your town a better place.…

I think this is really important because for a writer to compose a successful paper he or she must be interested and indulged in their topic. We were required to choose a controversial topic, introduce both sides of an argument and then present our opinion. I chose my topic to be the legalization of assisted suicide. The only downfall of this argumentative assignment was that it was the most time-consuming out of the three since we had to conduct heavy research. While other assignments took an average of two days, this one took a week until I felt confident enough to start writing.…

Over the first several weeks of school I have had the rewarding experience of being involved with the fast-track English 111 class provided by my high school and local community college. I have gained experience in managing deadlines, juggling prompts, meeting various criteria, and learning what it truly is that makes writing both correct and brilliant. Coming into this class, I truly lacked a general understanding of proper writing. I wasn’t able to write in MLA format, let alone understand how to execute a process-analysis method, or correct sentence structure. In these past few weeks alone I feel that I have developed as a writer and overall student, know having at least a grasp, if not broader knowledge, on how to produce quality, college-equivalent writing that has exceeded me past an amateur level.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

Writing has always been a struggle for me for as long as I can remember. I find it difficult to put my thoughts on a paper, especially if I have to do it in another language. Some people think that as long as they can speak a language or communicate with other people, it is enough. However, these people are totally wrong. People do not only need to speak a language fluently, but they also have to be able to write it.…
