“Mayra, after you graduate, we can just find you a good paying job.” My parents were really never enthusiastic with my desire to further my education. College, in my parents’ perspective, is unnecessary, time consuming and a way for the government to take your money. Honestly, their attitude had an effect on me, and I had that mentality for a couple of years. However, a lot of things changed during the upcoming years.
My father ran into some trouble during my adolescent years, and my family went through challenging times. My father was arrested for possession of narcotics. Unfortunately, he served time in the jail system for a couple of years, and I never had any further communication with him. In my eyes, my father was my role model, and I looked up to him which disappointed me. The chaos forced my mother, my younger brother and I to move to Florida and seek financial relief. I applied to Lee Early College because I wanted to make my parents proud. I knew I could handle every challenge they had to offer me. The early college program allows students to receive two years of college education at no cost. The program has helped me mature and grow into a determined young lady who wants to obtain great things. Any obstacle coming my way will not impede me from accomplishing my goals because I want to demonstrate to my family that it is possible and important to accomplish great things when everyone wants to see you fail. The hardships in my early life have taught me to stay strong through adversary. It had definitely been an arduous journey, but I have made it through. Unlike my father, I refuse to take the easy way out. The next step in my path to greatness is a four year university. All I ask is for UNCW to take a chance on me as I once did with a former stranger. He did not disappoint, and I assure you I will not disappoint this great
