After identifying personal health risks, it is important to move forward to find preventative measures to take in order to work toward maintaining health and wellness. As I read over the different preventative measures that have been identified for the personal health risks that I have identified, I noticed many overlapping measures and was pleased to find that I was already implementing many of them. The preventative measures that are a part of my lifestyle include not smoking; avoiding alcohol consumption; maintaining a healthy weight; practicing good hygiene; eating a healthy diet high in fiber, fruits, and vegetables and low in saturated fats, added sugars, and carbohydrates; avoiding excessive sun exposure; and practicing safe sex practices (Arthrolink, 2012; CDC, 2017; Mayo Clinic, 2014; Mayo Clinic, 2015; Mayo Clinic 2016; Mayo Clinic 2017a; Mayo Clinic, 2017b). I have grown up abstaining from all forms of tobacco and alcohol, I have always been a healthy weight and continue to maintain it, I practice good hygiene from showering regularly to brushing my teeth 2-3 times daily, I cover the parts of my body that easily burn with sun protection clothing, wear sunglasses and hats, use sunscreen as needed, abstain from all sexual behaviors prior to marriage, and enjoy a consistent healthy diet. The more informed we are about the risks posed against our health, the more fully we can identify specific actions we can take to modify our lifestyles to most fully support our wellness long term. Sure, there may be treatments to the health risks that I face, heart disease, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, cataracts, and cancer, but taking steps before problems surface is a far better tactic. Living a life that includes a healthy diet; daily exercise; abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and risky sex; protection from the sun; good hygiene; healthy weight maintenance; healthy levels of stress; and low joint strain can reduce my personal health risks. However, it is important to note that even taking all preventative measures can not eliminate risks entirely, and routine screening and medical checkup can play in important role in maintaining health and wellness in the event that the risks become reality (Mayo Clinic, 2017). Taking time to look back as well as to look forward can change our mindset from invinceable to intentional, providing us with the tools we need to most fully maintain our health and wellness as we live our lives to the
