Reflective Essay On Growing Ground

I spent my 10 volunteering hours for the Service Learning Project at Growing Grounds. Growing Grounds is a place where people with mental health issues can go to work and learn group skills such as teamwork, communication, etcetera. At Growing Grounds they are trying to get rid of the mental health stigma while giving the workers a better chance in the world. During my time volunteering I did a variety of different jobs, like planting, setting up orders, delivering orders, weeding, watering, and tagging plants. All of this was done working side-by-side with the workers and other volunteers.
The experience that affected me the most was hearing the story of one of the workers. I was, and I still am amazed about how they are still going today.

But there are a few concepts we learned about that I could connect to. Naturalistic vs. Personalistic medicine was an important one. Yes some of the workers, if not most needed to be on medication to function, but that was not the reason they were happy or working hard. They were happy because of Growing Grounds giving them a chance. They had somewhere to go where it was possible to make a little bit of money and have self worth. No medicine prescribed by doctors can do that for someone, so I believe the therapy of Growing Grounds was a Personalistic style of medicine. And then when the two styles of medicines are brought together is when the best recovery occurs. Another concept I connected from class was how once someone has been put at the bottom of the social ladder how hard it is to work their way back up. These people have been excluded from society because of their mental health, and they would still be excluded today if not for Growing Grounds. Growing Grounds was the one reaching back to these people, helping them along. And maybe that is all these people need. Someone to help

I have volunteered for the Naples Zoo, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Caleb’s Crusade, as well as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At the Naples Zoo, I assisted during their construction and I guided visitor’s through the zoo, since there was blocked off areas due to the construction. For the Gulf Coast Humane Society, I volunteered with them in a non-traditional way. I collected old t-shirts from Delta Delta Delta sisters and I used them to make over 100 chew toys for the dogs at the humane society. By doing this I know I was able to make an impact on the animals that were already in the shelter as well as the ones that have yet to come.…

In high school, I was also a part of Key Club which is a club devoted to community service. In this club, we would help donate money for organizations, help our school with different activities, and raise awareness for many issues in our nation and around the world. I have also helped my grandfather in West Virginia who has Parkinson’s disease. Even though this was family related, I still found what it meant to put others in front of myself and the true meaning of volunteering to do a hard job. With my grandfather, he can barely do anything himself so when I was around I would fix his food, get his Dopamine ready every 3 hours, help dress him, take him anywhere…

I am able to get along well with everyone I meet. I listen intently to what others have to say and put myself into their position. A few examples of diverse interactions I have experienced are through my job at Scheels, volunteering at Country Manor Nursing Home, We Day, volleyball, and softball. For instance, I helped serve a diverse group of individuals at a local nursing home by playing cards and talking with the residence. From these experiences, I have grown as an individual by being more understanding and aware of the differences of all people.…

I have worked many service jobs throughout my life. Most of those times I worked with the elderly in nursing and retirement homes. I enjoy volunteering for these people because being able to connect and hear stories with people who have lived a much longer life than mine gives me purpose. My service at these homes was a different type of work than being at the forest preserve however, the help I bring the the people in their home is very important. This includes bringing dinner to the table, playing board games to past time, or even taking someone for a walk.…

I like to think of leadership as anything you do to influence others. Although I do not often find myself in formal leadership positions, I believe that my willingness to volunteer and serve others has had a positive effect on those around me. The small and simple ways I lead sometimes go unnoticed but that has only made my sacrifice more special to me and, I hope, to those I have served. Selfless service creates a love that I cannot describe. Some of my dearest friends were made when I found myself the giver or receiver of such priceless love.…

I have been dedicated towards my studies since childhood thanks to the teachings my father has instilled in me. My career in the nursing field has been guided by two principles: (1) improving access to quality health care services for undeserved populations such as the poor, homeless, and orphans and, (2) teaching and delivering culturally competent and compassionate care. My educational background and volunteer experience has broadened my knowledge and has increased my depth of understanding of different cultural backgrounds and upbringings. During my first few years in college, I volunteered with the Fremont Homeless shelter where I was able to witness the difficulties that many adults and young children had such as not being able to have a place to stay or eat and having to relying on the shelter for these resources. I was also able to observe the mechanics of the organizational and…

When I was in middle school I was part of a church group called Pathfinders; and being a part meant that every holiday the group would do volunteer work for the community. Around thanksgiving we would collect food, walking door to door, and later give it to a local food kitchen. And around Christmas time there would be a toy collection for families in need. Having this past experience under my belt, it motivated me to volunteer my time with other students from Kean at the local food pantry. Another reason why I chose this volunteer work was because the other options did stick out to me as so impactful as this one.…
