Reflective Essay On Group Session

My group session experience as a group member and leader/co-leader has taught me to be more reserved and pull back from my usual leadership role. The group sessions have taught me to be a better listener by building trust with other group members through the commonalities we share. Throughout the group work, we developed the four stages of the group: initial stage, transition stage, working stage, and final stage. The professor was the facilitator for the first few group sessions and I eventually had the opportunity to be the co-leader after observing my professor. The role of being a leader has always came natural for me. As a result, my biggest goal in participating in the group sessions was to sit back and listen and allow others to speak. …show more content…
During the eighth session, I felt lost and asked Mathew if he was willing to share what I had missed during the session I was out ill. After Matthew summarized his discussion, I too shared my experiences and issues of holding relationships due to my busy schedule, preventing me from making time to check in on others. Both Matthew and I felt that this session and the commonalities we shared, built a connection to our relationship. In this session, we also brought up our cultural upbringings and I brought up the term “Machismo,” which in my culture teaches males that showing and expressing our feelings were not ideal. In this session, all but one member spoke about their cultures and we began to understand each other’s backgrounds better. Most importantly, I gained a better understanding on why some members were reluctant about speaking out about certain topics. From this session and on, the group members continued to work during different sessions, but Roy remained reluctant. Even though our group leader encouraged and invited him to be more active, he remained present but hesitant to

The premiere of my interest in leading was in fourth grade, during my first Science Fair. Random students were assigned as group leaders, and fortunately, I was one of the chosen. Never having been assigned as a leader before, I belittled the position and delegated all the tasks to my group members instead of participating as a leader. Needless to say, my group members didn’t keep up with the workload.…

Leadership is a characteristic that has not always come naturally to me, despite the fact that I enjoy talking to and working with people. I just never considered myself a leader. However, an opportunity to lead presented itself in my journalism class after being on staff for two years as a photographer. At the end of my junior year, I applied and interviewed to become photo editor. Being photo editor this year has given me the courage to take control and learn how to give direction to others.…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

When I lead something I make sure I know what I am getting myself into, to assure I know what I am doing so that I can help others. A leader is no help if they do not know what they are doing because then they cannot help the team, and therefore cannot lead them to finish. Someone needs to be supportive all the way to and have a personality that inspires, not a personality that aggravates everyone. The goal is for a person not to think they are better than everyone else and show them that. Instead, everyone is equal, a friend not a…

From someone not under the responsibility of a leadership role, it may seem like a wonderful job, since they can escape from the usual workload that a non-leader has to put up with, and have authority over others. Yet, they tend to overlook the amount of dedication and self-evaluation that a leader has to go through in order for their group to succeed. One must better and uphold themselves to a high standard in order to be an efficient leader, and not for power alone. They must have a wide knowledge of their position and patience to help others in case an issue or situation arises. When things go wrong, the leader, not the group, is blamed, and often is the one that pays for the consequences that their peers have done under their watch.…

Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year. This show how important the theories are to me as an emerging social worker.…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

Leadership is a class I’ve always been interested in being a part of. Growing up, I was always taught to be a leader. My parents have always told me “You don’t choose to be a leader, you slowly evolve into a leader.” It’s always stuck with me and I’ve learned that I must set goals and go through struggles in life in order to learn from them. Those small things have allowed me to transform into the person that I am today.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
