Reflective Essay On Gender Stereotypes

It was a little hard at first to figure out something to do for this observational assignment on Gender Stereotyping. I do not have identity issues, however I am more on the masculine side, in other words a tomboy. Gender stereotyping is when you are judged by your gender, it is mostly looked upon as negative but it can be positive as well. As soon as, your gender is known, the stereotyping begins. If an individual is a girl she can be looked up to be more nurturing, and if of opposite sex, is to be the opposite. The three gender stereotypes I chose to break were: to open the door for males and females,mostly males, cat calling, and asking a boy on a date. What I decided to do first was to open the door for males and see how they would react. Most of the males wanted me to go ahead in first while they held the door open. Not many went in the door before me to keep the door open behind them as they went in. There was a moment when there was a lot of back and forth dialogue of “no, you go on ahead”. That motion showed maturity and respect in general, and that even though I was showing mannerisms it didn’t feel right for a female to be holding a door open for a male. It could have been a little ego involved in but I didn’t really think too much into it I wanted to get out the way after awhile. Also, in this day in age an individual will rarely see males opening car doors, or pulling a seat out for a lady to sit down. I am not for sure why this is, as if mannerisms do not matter anymore because some females put on the impression of being independent. Also, at my job when we line up I tell them ladies first and the boys always ask “why do they have to always be first?” I always let them know that is the gentleman way of doing things, and that a lady will appreciate it. I am not for sure if they understand it very well but I have came to the conclusions that the parents are not teaching their children and putting it all on the school …show more content…
I usually hear a lot of this during the summer time or when it’s nice out when females wear less clothing. I decided to catcall females instead of males because I already do that to guys for the fun of it. I always compliment females whether I know them or not. However, getting a female’s attention is a lot different. There is a goal to reach whether it’s to get a name or their number after you have received their attention. Also, with females there are different reactions and/or outcomes because all females are different .I believe that doing this to strangers was a little weird and creepy at first for me. A lot of girls laughed and were blushing and I even had got a couple numbers. Maybe in my before life I was a player I don’t have the slightest idea why I was so successful, I just have a likable
