English is a well-known language all over the world, I’m a college student attending the University of Houston Downtown. I am currently enrolled in an English class, through the lessons of this class I have developed lots of qualitative skills that I can use in any other essay I must write in the future. Even though is not my first language I enjoyed learning English with Professor Claudia smith. She has introduced me to many different styles of writing and books. One of the many thing we constantly talked in class was a book titled “just mercy”. We also talked about writing evaluative and argumentative essays. The overall class structure was very common and clear. English was a great opportunity for me to enhance my English vocabulary and …show more content…
For my first essay which was an evaluative essay I can recall the specific use of the book in which I target the view on interracial couples. Because Bryan in his book dealt with an interracial case. In which a black male who had a family was flirting a white waiter. The situation was tragic and the man was sent to jail for that. Form reading that specific case I pointed about that even in today generation we see interracial couples still being treated inequality. As for my second paper I wrote about the idea that interracial couples had more benefits then negatives our society, however for this essay I researched more websites to have a strong argumentative essay. However I also used the book to add on to the essay. In addition to both essays my final essay was ten pages long, it consisted of more evidence and research as well as knowledge from my part. I also added the inequality in gay and lesbian couples in our generation. Overall I think all three of my essay proved a point in which I supported interracial, gay and lesbian couples, because I believe that have a right to love and be with whoever they

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument.…

In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Throughout my journey of English 111 and English 112, I have learned so much and mastered several concepts. Throughout this course, I have definitely grown as a writer. In English 111 we worked on the following essays: Narrative, Expository, and Persuasive. In English 112 we worked on the following papers: Summary and Response, Argumentative, Literary Analysis, and the Multigenre paper. In English 112 we also received a book called They Say, I Say, in which there were several passages using templates to help with our Argumentative Paper. I must say, I really enjoyed this book and it really did help to form the basis of my Argumentative Paper. We also read the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare for which we wrote a Literary Analysis Paper. Reading the play in class was fun and helped me understand Shakespeare’s words as we did a seminar and paper.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence. I still struggle with this on a daily basis.…

This paper was an analysis of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. This was the paper that took the most time for me to write because I was insecure about my writing. The content of the paper itself was well thought out; however, there were some small grammatical errors and unclear sentences. The responses that I received from this paper exceeded my expectations because I was very astonished that people could comprehend my writing. After taking their comments into consideration, I realized that I might have judged myself too harshly. The paper itself followed all of the criteria, and my simplistic writing style allowed the reader to straightforwardly comprehend the message that I was trying to convey. While it did contain some incoherent sentences such as, “His repetitiveness compels the audience to listen and his extreme exaggerations show the audience that the situation is bad and needs to be fixed immediately,” (Nguyen “King’s Persuasion for Success” 3). I recognized that I did not have an extensive vocabulary; I was not able to efficiently argue my point in a consistent fashion. As I continued this course, I realized that my downfall would be because of my lack of experience and…

Some of the essays that we have worked on are summary and response essay, definition essay, cause and effect and argumentative essay. Mr. Dutt has taught us how to express ourselves in each of these essays and format for it. The one that I enjoyed a great deal is the argumentative essay. In the argumentative essay we argue if we agree or disagree with a topic we were given. However, he gave us an opportunity to change the topic if we wanted to, which I did. I am glad that he gave me this chance to evolve myself in this particular essay and that he would comment me that I had great context. A little praise helped me feel loose some of that insecurity I…

I choose to write about the color blind racism that occurred during the musical. I looked for articles and scholarly articles that dealt with some type of racism in the play, I came across an article that was about the music choices of the chosen for specific actors and their race. An example of this is a black female actor performing a hip-hop piece. When I was continuing to write my final product I found another source that dealt with issues such as minorities not being represented in the musical play. I began to incorporate sentence structures from the book “They say/I say” for the essay to include sections of my ideas and statements about the ideas of the authors. I had to revise my introduction and the thesis statement that I created so it can allow the other body paragraphs to connect to it. I turned in my essay, I got it back and received an 82 on it. It was a slight improvement from the first essay. I wanted to get better for the essays to…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes. I learned that you have to take your time and start he project early this way you can make multiple drafts and with each draft your essay continues to get better and better. This…
