Summary Of Divergent By Veronica Roth

I read the Science Fiction book Divergent by Veronica Roth. This book has 487 pages in it. According to a review by BOOKPAGE “You will be up all night with Divergent, a brainy thrill-ride of a novel.” I think the intended audience for Divergent are young adults probably ages 11-15 because kids that age would be interested in Divergent the most because it is their level for reading and it is a really good story. Younger kids might not want to read it because they might not be interested in the story and it might be a little to mature and violent for kids under 10 years old. The main character in Divergent is a sixteen year-old girl named Beatrice who lives in a future world where there are different factions that everyone …show more content…
This decision will change the rest of her life. It is very hard for Beatrice to choose her faction because she doesn’t want to leave her family. When you are sixteen you take a test that decides which faction you belong in. Beatrice’s result is Divergent. Beatrice is Divergent. Divergent means that you are a mixture of Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. Divergent are supposedly dangerous people and most people like the Dauntless leaders want them dead. Beatrice was told not to tell a soul she was Divergent. When the choosing ceremony rolls around Beatrice is very nervous. And when it is her turn to choose she chooses Dauntless. Risk taking, dangerous, brave, and strong Dauntless. Then she needs to go through Dauntless initiation. That’s where you have to jump on and off a moving train, and jump off a building into Dauntless headquarters. Beatrice was the first person to jump off the building. When she landed in Dauntless headquarters a tall handsome guy that looked to be about eighteen years old helped her off the net she landed on. He was one of the leaders of Dauntless. When he had helped her onto her feet he asked her what her name was. When you are in a new faction you can have a different name or nickname so Beatrice told him it was ‘Tris’. Tris made a few new friends but you will have to read the book to find out them. But then something horrible comes up and Tris is the only person that can help solve the problem. The Dauntless leaders (all except for Tobias) are planning to do something very bad and Tris and Tobias need to stop them. I think the theme of this book is love because Tris and her family need to make lots of sacrifices for each other to help keep each other safe and to do what is right for one another. Another theme might be selflessness because Tris needs to do a lot of things to benefit other people’s needs and not only

To begin with, the novel starts out in the countryside of Colorado and later transfers to a fictional city named Tabula Rasa. Tabula Rasa is a city much like Las Vegas only with fewer restrictions. Additionally, the story takes place thirty-to-forty years from now, in a future that resembles the present with just some quirks that you would need to adjust to if you were to live there. Finding one’s true self poses a challenge to many, but in Veronica Roth’s Divergent, this journey is proven to be more difficult because of the dystopian society in which the protagonist lives. Upon learning that she is Divergent, Beatrice “Tris” Prior must choose one faction to reside in for the rest of her life. Through character, motif, and conflict, Roth creates a systemic society which strictly adheres to conformity, resulting in finding one’s true identity. Tris’ character aims to fit into society throughout the novel, and the literary element of character reveals the theme of self-identity. Her Divergence, however, makes this seemingly simple process more complicated for her.…
