Reflective Essay On Delayed Day Care

TSC is a disease that causes benign tumors to grow on major organs, such as the brain, eyes, kidneys, lungs, heart, and liver. The tumors cause four major symptoms: autism, epilepsy, mental retardation, and physical retardation.
That year my family attended a conference regarding the disease to learn more about the TSC and its effects. At the conference, children were put into either a regular or “delayed” daycare service. The regular daycare was what the name implies- a typical daycare. The delayed daycare, however, was a daycare where nearly every child had an individual care-worker to make sure they would be okay. At a convention for TSC, I was the only child with TSC in the regular day-care.

I have also been very fortunate to have been able to give speeches about my disease to a few hundred people, something I would love to do again. These events helped me develop my own leadership and communication abilities in ways most other people haven’t had the opportunities to do so.
These abilities carried through high school, where I was proud to be drum major and president of the band, expert lawyer for mock trial, historian of National Honor Society, and President of my class. Upon enrolling in high school I realized that I could no longer put an average effort into easy class work and be rewarded with academic satisfaction. After joining the honors course along with band and the FFA, it was revealed to me that high school was a different culture than middle school. I quickly discovered that hard work would be required to be successful in everything I will ever do. Band demanded countless hours of practice, but I ultimately gained first chair in the top band, as well as squad leader over the trumpet section. Like band, the FFA required hours of dedication, but I distinguished myself from other FFA members.…

Tuberous Sclerosis, or TSC, is a genetically inherited disease that is characterized by the numerous benign tumors in many parts of the body. It can cause symptoms such as developmental delay, autism, tumor, and skin abnormalities. Tuberous Sclerosis is caused by a mutation on the TSC1 gene located on chromosome 9 or the TSC2 gene located on chromosome 16. These genes make a protein called tuberin, and scientist believe Tuberous Sclerosis is caused when those genes mutate and produce more tuberin which would then allow the tumors to grow. However, only one of the genes needs to be affected for Tuberous Sclerosis to show up, so this makes this gene very rare.…
